Spare wheel options?

Featured Replies

Will a full size spare fit in the wheel well in place of the space-saver?

My next company car will most likely be a Superb.

I know there is an option for full size spare on Passats, just wondered if the same can be done in the Superb?

Well I have certainly seen a full size one fit in the new Superb (see pic below).  I assume that once you actually have a wheel well in the boot that the size doesn't vary.  This is a 16" below but that a 17/18 should fit as well as there was space in the one I saw.

Thanks for the info

Full size spare depends on what wheel options are chosen for the car (assuming of course, by full size spare, you mean one that is the same specification as the wheels that are fitted to the car). I guess the golden question is will a 235/45 R18 or 235/40 R19 fit flush? I don't think a definitive answer will come unless someone has a car with this size wheel and is willing to pop one off and try it in the space. There may also be other considerations - i.e. if you have a hatch / estate or VBF.

`VBF`?

Variable Boot Floor!

Variable Boot Floor!

Thank you.

Like I say there was more than enough space in what I saw - definitely as much if not more than my MkII and I can fit the 18" flush in there no problem.  The 19" fit is good question alright??

The diameter should not be the issue as the rolling circumference will be almost identical no matter 16” 17” 18” or 19” rims are fitted, I imagine getting a 235 wide tyre under the floor may be the issue?

Good point - I forgot the 18s are now 235 as opposed to 225.

Yeah it's the width that's the issue - need to see if 235 fits.

Can confirm spare wheel is a 205 16" not a space saver in new Superb seen today in a dealer, I think a 235 would fit as I put a 235 19" in my Superb II, but don't quote me on it!

Which equates as a space saver as the narrowest tyre available on a MKIII Superb is 215

Granted it is not a skinny 125/80/18” space saver, but neither is it full size either

Did you look to see if there was enough width for a 215 or even 235 tyre under the boot floor?

I think you could get a 235 there no problem, like I have said got a 235 in my Superb II no problem, my concerns was a skinny space saver! Think its the same wheel well or larger than a MK2.

I have looked at another hatch today and the boot carpet sits flush on the sidewall of the spare (205) tyre, so if you want to fit a full width (235) spare wheel you are going to have too space the boot floor up by 30mm.

Any good recommendations for such wheels to buy? If one's leasing a car over a couple of years, you don't want to lease the spare wheel as well!

For the sake of just a couple of quid a month, isn't it just easier to have the spare wheel option fitted at the factory?

May not be possible if it's a company car. Some schemes only supply the car with no options.

Others may have limited opportunity for options- for example, I can get an SE-L but with no options, or an SE Business with some options etc

Take a look on eBay as there are several dealers selling a spare wheel kit on there, don’t forget you will also need the tool kit as well (jack etc) as these are not supplied unless you order the spare wheel.

pay £90 to get a spare wheel, probably never use it and have to hand it back

pay £50 for a old wheel, probably never use it and keep it for your next car (or sell it)

Seriously? Over a two year lease you are looking at less than a £1 a week.

Gimme £50 then! Only a couple of quid a month over 2 years.... ;-)

I have a 205/55/16 tyre, so intend to make this the 'spare' for the new Superb when it arrives, what 'j' and 'ET' sized steel wheel will I need?

Has anyone looked at these measurements on a spare wheel in one of the new Superbs?

I've been looking on ebay etc at the required PCD of 5 x 112 but there are lots of options!!
