Engine idle.

Featured Replies

Morning all.

Left the engine on the car ticking over the idea. The engine increased its idle speed from idle to 1000 rpm on its own. Any one got any idears or thoughts on why the car is doing it??
Ive ran the car on the diagnostic but it didn't show any stored fault codes.
The car drives normally through all the gears.
Its the 2 liter diesel and a bkd engine.

Diesel particle filter regeneration may have cause that (if it's so then don't worry about that).

Internet is full of articles about this thing. You can read for example this:

thanks for the heads up. I don't know if my car has a dpf filter!

Is it a PD170 or 2litre Scout or 4x4? They are the only PD engined MkII Octavias fitted with a dpf.

So unless it's a vRS it doesn't have one.

If it's a BKD it definitely won't have a DPF.

As bizarre as it may sound, my 2.0 BKD engined Octavia always used to do this if the alternator got damp! Drive through flood water a bit too fast so it sprayed up into the engine bay, or spray the alternator accidentally with the hosepipe when washing the car, the revs would rise to 1000 rpm until the alternator dried out a bit, then drop back down to normal. I could also replicate it by giving the alternator a light soaking with a plant mist sprayer.

It does feel very much like what happens during a DPF regeneration on a DPF equipped car, but of course no DPF is fitted on these.

Strange but true!
