Rattles!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I know rattles are a common theme on the forum, but please bear with me ...

I have 2 annoying noises in my 03 plate Fabia TDi Elegance:

The first is a kind of vibrating noise coming from the front passenger door, which occurs when I drive over anything other than an ultra smooth road. Sounds like something rattling against the window glass, and seems to vanish when the window is wound down.

The second is a really annoying metallic rattle from somewhere in the dash, around the instrument pod area (at first I thought it was from the steering wheel, but I think it's actually in the dash itself). Its not the centre vent area and seems to occur more now the weather has got colder.

Has anybody else had the same problems? The dealer (typically!) didn't notice anything on the test drive when it had a service recently, but they're definitely there & driving me mad!

Cheers!

Dont know about the window rattle, but could the dash board one be the section of dash between the steering column and the radio, mine rattles all the time just try pushing on it when driving.

Also, my passenger seat base rattles (all the time), rattles from both front door cards, both rear 'c post' covers. A dubious clonking noise from the front left suspension on hitting a bump (with the left side of the car) when turning left. And the glove box rattles as well.

Oh and its an 05 with 7.5k on the clock.

I recommend turning up the radio (providing it doesnt make the door rattle worse).

And like you when I booked the car in to get the rattle sorted the dealer couldnt hear the anything when they drove it. I got back in the car to drive it home and there it was clear as day.

I recon the rattles are harder to spot when thier redlining the motor all over the place with the radio blasting out. Or am I being too synical

I noticed that if I push under the steering column area, the dash rattle stops, wonder whether I have a screw lose somewhere!!!

Lambic, try pressing down on the fuse box cover (just to right of steering column on mine). Does the tinny rattle stop?

You may be able to get rid of the door rattle by pushing (quite firmly) along where the cloth bit meets the plastic bit, just below the bottom edge of the window. This part of the door panel is only a friction fit, and it should move up a little bit when you do, which may be enough to stop it rattling.

If that doesn't work, try loosening the door panel a bit (4 torx screws along the bottom edge), giving it a bit of a jiggle, and then putting the screws in again while pushing down on the top edge of the door pocket. This may help by removing any slack in the door panel from it being a bit out of alignment when fitted.

If that doesn't work, try the dealership, or do as I did - take the door panel off completely, and stuff the void behind it with newspaper!

No rattles now!!! :D

Thaks guys - will try both those ideas.

Cheers!

Lambic I have to apologise for giving you the bum steer. What I thought was the fuse box cover is in fact a flap down cubby hole. In this is a black U-clip (god knows what for). It could be the flap or the loose clip causing the rattle I reckon.

Hi,

Found the fuse box cover in the manual (drivers end of dashboard) & decided to take it off anyway. What a nightmare! its an awful design & requires a screwdriver to prise it off.

Checked nothing was lose in there & was attempting to put the cover back on when one of the metal clips sprung off & fell into the bowels of the fuse box area. Great! Now I still have the rattle & a missing fusebox cover clip! :(

The rattle seems to subside when I push under the steering column area, above the pedals. But its a real pain driving in that position!!

Modern day build quality!

IIRC, that's a little shelf area isn't it? Think I kept my seatbelt cutter there. Worth checking to see if there's anything like a clip or screw on there which could be causing the rattling :D

If it's not, ignore me as I'm probably confusing it with a different car.....
