12V supply for radio only showing 7.5V (yellow permanent supply)

Featured Replies

Hi guys

I am trying to fit a new car radio that I bought (Pioneer) and it requires a 12V supply permanent from the battery. I have to hook this up to the yellow cable. But my permanent supply behind the radio is only showing 7.5V. Any idea why this might be? As a solution, could I perhaps hook the radio to another power source - and where would I find the alternative power source? Do I need to run another cable with a fuse to somewhere or...?

Thanks in advance

What colour(s) is the wire you're measuring 7.5V on?

Clue's in the title?

@ OP - is this with ignition on or off? What do you get on the red wire?

The wiring diagram I'm looking at shows the permanent 12V wires to the radio as black/blue, coming from fuse 45. So I'm not sure the question I asked isn't relevant?

my bad - i mis understood

I assumed (makes an ass out ouf u and me :notme: ) that he was talking about the wiring on the radio being yellow. If i remember red/yellow is the failrly standard iso radio connection colours

I think that the yellow wire from the car loom is only an accessory live wire so gives enough power to remember settings without a massive drain. The red wire on the car loom is what supplies the 12v constant.

Hi all,

Thanks for your responses. And sorry that I forgot about this post.  I still have not worked out why my yellow (yes on the loom) / red (OEM) is only giving 7.5V instead of 12V.

But I have found a workaround. The glove box light has a 12V permanent supply. Cut a bit of the insulation off the back of it and made my own cable connection to the radio loom.

Problem solved!
