Mysterious engine spec in 2010 Fabia

Featured Replies

Can someone help with this !  I've been looking at buying a 2010 Fabia SE today.  Think I've found a tidy car, it goes nicely and has that 3 cylinder "thrum" and I'm sure it is 3 cylinders, I remember seeing 3 inlet manifold/induction tubes under the bonnet. All good so far, and V5 shows it as 70HP and 128 CO2s, confirmed in DVLA online check on reg number.

I took a photo of the specification sticker to check options, and have just spotted that says it is a 77Kw TSI.

If I run the VIN number on that sticker through a checker then it says

Škoda Fabia II Classic/Active/Elegance 1.2 TSI 77kw

So, something wrong.

With the age of the car I know it could be either and there is a huge difference in insurance groups between the two, important as we will be insuring a teenager to drive it.

Now it did feel quicker than I would expect a 70bhp car of Fabia size to be but I don't know Fabias well enough to be sure - and I'm sure it was 3 cylinder and from what I've read the TSI is 4 cylinder isn't it ?

Of course next step would be to check the vin on the sticker is the vin on the car and V5 but can't do that before Monday.

Any other suggestions as to what to check ? Have those specification stickers been known to be wrong ? I know the DVLA has but if it is a 3 cylinder ?!

I'm told it has a clear HPI certificate and it looks absolutely genuine and original.

Very puzzling but maybe not to a Skoda person ??!

Could be a 3 or 4 pot as the 1.2 comes in both flavours

The VIN checker says :

Škoda Fabia II Classic/Active/Elegance 1.2 TSI 77kw

DVLA says:

Skoda Fabia Se 12v (5 Door Hatchback)

Now that is assuming the VIN number on the sticker is the real VIN number of the car (I can't check that before tomorrow) but I'm sure the sticker is what it left the factory with. There are no signs it is a car that has been "messed with"

The badge on the back is HTP which also point to DVLA and the paperwork being right.

Anyone know how to decode the engine numbers ? Is there a prefix or part of the number which shows for sure what ps/hp engine it is ?

What does it redline at?

A HTP 70 is 6k or just under if its an older engine.

I think the TSI is abit higher? But can check on the parents 105 yeti later if nobody can chime in?

Not very scientific though lol.

Maybe upload a pic of the engine bay? Could defo tell you then

Can somebody confirm the engines in 2010, were they available in the SE with.?

1.2 12v 69ps 3 cylinder 1,198cc

1.2 TSI  86ps 4 cylinder 1,197cc

1.2 TSI 105ps 4 cylinder 1,197cc

(1.2 TSI 105ps 4 cylinder 1,197cc DSG)

...............

Fabia S

1.2 6v 60ps 3 cylinder 1,198cc

I think you could get the SE with a 60hp HTP, but its not 6v. Its a 12v with a different map on the post revision HTP

But yeah thats the engines.. If the OP's car is a facelift model. Otherwise, its the prefacelift engines. 1.2, 1.4, 1.6 petrols i think. All N/A ofc

I've a dash photo and red line is 6000. Annoyingly  I didn't take any pics of engine.

It is the facelift model.

I cant post photos as i refuse to re-purchase freedom.

But if you click this link... Does it look like the engine bay pic second to the bottom?

Well I've been to see the car again today (and have bought it) mystery solved.....

Yes I took a photo of the spec sticker but not the one in the boot, it was the one in the service book.

The service book has been with the car since new, has the registration number on it and all the correct service info with miles...

But the VIN number on the sticker in the service book isn't the same as the one on the V5. It's a few digits different, So what must have happened is the original Skoda dealer in Stoke mixed it up with one from a TSI and over the last 5 years nobody has noticed.

(And somewhere out there is a 2010 Fabia TSI trundling around with my service book in it's glovebox !)

Glad youve got to the bottom of it.

So its a HTP 70 then?

It is, and I'm liking the engine, has a bit of the Fiat Twin air about it. Yes it doesn't push you in the back of the seat as you accelerate up a motorway slip road but feels fast enough and the power there is is delivered smoothly across the rev range, not in lumps as you can get with small turbos and diesels. Important as it'll partly be a learner car for my son.

Also seems simple and reliable from what I've read - certainly compared to other choices in the Fabia.

Time will tell !

Spot on

Yeah i like mine, its not fast, but its simple, reliable and the torque is in the right place.

Oh and its light, which makes it better when youre driving quite spirited. It changes direction well (:

...and a most excellent car for learning in it is, too! ;) Good luck with it.
