What's the best place to get rear brake calipers from?

Featured Replies

What's the best place to buy rear calipers for my 2009 FL VRS TDi?

My rear calipers have seized on both sides and so I either need to buy two new ones or refurb them.

Does anyone know part numbers for them too?

Cheers :)

I got 2 new rear ones off ebay for £175. I'll try and find the seller.

I got mine from Eurocarparts. Mine is a pre facelift so i dont know if they are the same but the part numbers are:-133443930 & 133443940. I paid £180 for mine.

Tried a link but failed. The seller is saberautospares. They are genuine calipers but they take the vw/audi logo off. I've used them twice now. The first time for the green calipers for my old mk1 and recently for the red ones for my mk2. Service and delivery time is brilliant. Calipers are excellent.

Mk1 vrs calipers are different from MK2 vrs calipers (mind you the same seller could sell MK2 ones as well)  :D

Edit.....just seen your latest post 1 minute before mine.........you need to change your picture & update your car details....  :D

They are different and yes they sell different ones!!

Saberautospares are currently waiting on calipers coming in. ETA this Friday. I need a set too.

Anyone know where to get the seal kits for the mk2 rears (TRW)? I will get replacemenys then refurbish the originals to keep as spares. Seemingly these calipers are prone to the seals swelling up and the caliper seizing.

Are they not re-con calipers.

Nope genuine TRW brand new calipers.

Well, I settled for a set of Pagid calipers from Eurocarparts today and I can hand in the old calipers and get £72 back too so a bonus!

They are currently hanging up in wires drying as I painted them red and all calipers once I'm rested after marriage this week will be re painted in the new red so they all match.

Bought a set of new 272mm Pagid discs and pads too, thought I might as well!

So, car went in today to have the brakes done, left a phone number as you do.

Get home, I get s phone call.... Great.

Turns out a little metal bit connecting the brake line to the caliper has corroded and wasn't a stock item so 2 new ones had to be ordered from TPS which means delay :(

I miss my Skoda!! :(

My car did that too, the little brake pipes are about £19 each.

Those are the ones, whatever they are. £18 each side. Just my luck :/

£18....each!.....for a tiny bit of brake pipe.... Why didnt the mechanic just make a brake pipe? thats what i would have done, far cheaper than £18 each (quicker too,if you have to order them).

Mine actually snapped due to so much corrosion when i changed my rear calipers. due to the arkward shape i tried making some with copper pipe and i can tell you they aint an easy shape to replicate. The final attempt was just basically a loop and it was very close to the wheel when it went back on. Needless to say, i paid the 19 quid in the end and wished I'd done that in the first place!!

Any Motor Factors when you have decided on the Manufacturer.

Oh well, got the car back, calipers were the wrong ones that ECP supplied for my car and so were the discs and Skoda said my car had 272mm rear discs on, turns out they were 286mm ones and so they supplied pads too as the were Brembo discs and pads with new red TRW calipers. All in plus an oil change with supplied Castrol FST 5w 30 I was £617 worse off :(

Couple this to my wedding, it's been an expensive week!!

I just got a pair of rear TRW red calipers for £150 delivered. Also got 282mm Pagid disks and pads to get fitted later this week.

If you dont want to pay £18+ for the caliper pipe then Saber Auto Spares in Brimingham can make up the copper brake pipes as he made some for me over the weekend. However you will need to bend the pipe into shape by hand, possibly could do a "U" shape from the caliper to the brake hose.

I would recommend a 7"- 8" pipe with a 10mm fitting one end and a 12mm fitting on the other.

If you don't have the tools for flaring a pipe get a garage to do it. Simple to make but the tools and materials are expensive for what little you will use if them.

Refurb of you calipers is actually very easy. Evan easier if you have a compressor or track pump to blow the piston out with (remove the bleed nipple and push the air gun into the socket, apply air pressure and it pops straight out) Once the parts have been removed, use a pick to remove the old seals and clean everything up. Apply a little bit of red grease to the new seals and fit in place. Light great of the piston and slide into place then fir the dust cover.

Rear calipers just need to remove the return Spring, undo the nut that holds the the handbrake mechanism take off the levers. Pack the calipers opening with a cloth before blowing the piston out so the piston doesn't come completely out. Tap (soft hammer or wood) the threaded end of the bolt into the caliper. Pull the last of the piston and internal handbrake mechanism out. Clean the piston and mechanism up included the threaded shaft that connects to the external handbrake levers. Screw the piston back into mechanism but not fully. Replace the seals including the o-ring where the threaded shaft exits the back of caliper. When inserting the piston and mechanism back into the caliper align the notch with the recess in the caliper then wind the remainder of the piston in. Put the handbrake lever back on. Note, that it should be fully open against the travel limiter. Apply thread locker to the nut before fitting. Now the difficult bit of refitting the spring. Use the new one if supplied. The spring will require some decent to stretch it over the hooks. A spring puller is a god send other use strong string and the shaft of screwdriver to pull with or mole grips. Make sure fixed side is pointed away from you.

Use your phone to take pictures before disassembling at each stage to remind you how it goes back together.

A bit of red grease on the bleed nipple threads stops them seizing up.
