Oil Temperature question

i was scowling through my Maxi dot screen on the way home recently and noticed the oil temp reading.

 Octavia vrs dsg diesel.

i was not driving hard, a steady 40 -65 mph journey home  air temp reading around 19°C and noticed my oil temp was between 96°C and 103°C

On another journey , slightly cooler it was the same.

 

Is this the normal running temps for this car???

Sounds like good temperatures. Mine runs around those (97-99 at 70mph yesterday). Coolant temp is usually 90, and it's that that cooled by airflow over the radiator, which in turn cools oil/ engine block so there is going to be a temp difference to get transfer.

(Lower speeds also mean less air flow over the radiator so don't necessarily assume higher speeds higher temps)

After a recent trip to Italy, going over the Alps with 4 adults and associated luggage mine got to 124c going up. Obviously on way down cooled down to 90+. Is it worth changing oil? Was serviced in April this year.

Oil temperatures of around 100 deg is pretty bang on. Up to 120-130 is no problem for modern synthetic oils, it should not be any problems as long as it is changed at specified intervals and the filter is good. Oils are tested to give sufficient lubrication as high as 180 degrees (and even higher). Of course the degradiation increases at the highest temperatures.

In fact it is healthy for the oil to get over 100 now and then.

Water temp is always around 90 degrees.

I have the car serviced every 10,000miles at present, 

The oil works best at a higher temperature than you might think - 90-110 for a "normal" working range and 130 degrees on occasion is no sweat for modern synthetics.  Mine will sit at over 100 degrees cruising down the motorway - not an issue.  The sensors on the engine will tell if the oil needs changing due to degradation (i.e. from overheating) so don't worry about it.  That's why variable servicing can be "upto" 18,000 miles or so as oil quality is monitored.  I increased the "miles to oil service" on a BMW by 5000 miles by topping it up - it did take over a litre though but that litre of nice new stuff then changed the amount of life the oil in the sump had.

 

Getting it hot also makes sure any moisture in there disappears - I remember the days when mayonnaise in the oil in winter was the norm (I used to run Minis and other old stuff back then) even though its one of the signs of a blown head gasket.

  That's why variable servicing can be "upto" 18,000 miles or so as oil quality is monitored.

 

There us no variable servicing, just "long life"which is 18k or 24 months.

From the brochure (similar in the handbook IIRC):

 

 

Flexible regime: Sensors in the engine detect when a service is needed. You will

be informed of this by a service light which will show at any point between 9,000
and 20,000 miles, up to 24 months (whichever comes first).

 

Long Life servicing is dependant on the oil quality sensors being fitted - all O3's have them to my knowledge but some VAG models only started having them in the last few years (for example I think it was a MY12.5 or MY13 change on the TSI Fabia).  It isn't fixed at 18k or 24 months.
