Fuel filter in, still hesitant so no fix there. I think it might be a bit less laggy at low revs, so maybe a bit better. This might be a placebo affect.

I have noticed overfuelling type smoke when I pull away once or twice as a note.

I still think the car is better when cold, so temperature sensor is ordered and coolant is got. I will see if I can find the sensor and swap it, I know its a 2 minute job.

I am worrying that it might be an injector now although the idle stabilization shows now alarming fugures. The cable loom to the plug at the side of the engien hasnt been changed yet so this could still be the culprit.

Right, latest updates....

Fuel filter in, Injector cleaner done, fuel temp sensor done, coolant temp sensor done, and MAF sensor done.... still losing power.

One thing I noticed, was then I did the fuel temperature sensor a few days after swapping out a black fuel filter the fuel that came out could have passed for engine oil it was so black. Any ideas?

It sounds like the tandem pump oil seal has failed / failing. It allows oil into the fuel system as the tandem pump is driven off the end of the camshaft, and oil in the head gets sucked into the pump past the seal.

Either a new tandem pump, or it's perhaps possible that there's a replaceable seal on them now.

Thanks Radders. TBH I thought for £25 plus a gasket I could try a 2nd hand one to see if characteristics change. I think its an easy swap by the looks of it. Any idea? If its just a matter of unbolt the old one, ckean the seal up and fit a new one then ill get on ebay!

They are about £175 on Carparts4less.co.uk at the moment, I wouldn't recommend a 2nd hand unit as this oil contamination issue may still be present.  Once you have fitted a new pump the filter will need changing again after the system has been run for a few days as it will still contain some oil.

Right oh, I will get onto carparts4less then! Thanks, It looks like its easy enough to swap over.

If this doesnt solve it then I am thinking maybe leaky injector seals...?

Its another possibility unfortunately

Hi,

I had to do my tandem pump some time ago due to the diesel had engine oil in it, its a 20 min job, just remember to bleed the system of air, I didn't quite do it enough and it was a pig to start.

Didn't get rough running etc like you tho.

OK thanks Trev.

TBH I am just gradually working through every sensor and solenoid using 'logic' and also price as the next step all the time. The engine will be the best PD170 lump in existance by the time I am done.

Your welcome.

Mine was easy, the diesel was black in the filter housing, and had black bits floating around in it, done some research and come up with the tandem fuel pump.

Took the old one apart (still got it somewhere, no user serviceable parts inside), I think it was down to a 50p/£1 a the most oil seal that failed, there was also a bit of wear on the pump itself.

Right back on this now guys. I had the MOT done last week, after new shocks and brakes all round and an investigation into an oil leak the garage pointed out the o-ring on one of the boost hoses wasnt seated correctly, so I had a big boost leak. This fixed the terrible lag and aparrent overall loss i power I have been seeing. And the oil leak is fixed, it was just the oil that had accumilated in the interccoler blowing out. No more smoke on occasion everything is almost running as it should.

Anyway, I still have the blocked fuel filter feeling and big sudden power loss with no errors on VCDS. I have been reading up that these PD170's have a stutter problem in general and Shark are claiming to have a 100% fix. Anyone think this might be the fix for me?
