intermittent fault with EGR valve

Featured Replies

Hi

The glow plug light in my Fabia TDI has recently started flashing. this doesn't happen when I start the car but happen sometimes after driving about 10 miles or so. after it starts flashing I get very little acceleration in third gear and above.

i've taken the car for MOT & service which it passed but the diagnostic showed a fault with the EGR valve. my garage reset the warning light but the problem has persisted.

they suggested it will cost around £500 to replace the EGR valve

I have a few questions

what does the EGR valve do, and will I do the car any damage if I keep driving the car short journeys (15 miles or so) until the end of the month in its current condition.

are there any other options for fixing this problem apart from spending £500 to replace the EGR valve.

Thanks

Ewan

What year is your Fabia Ewan?

Don't worry too much about continuing to drive the car.

The EGR system feeds a controlled amount of exhaust gases back into the intake. The purpose of this is reducing the amount of excess oxygen in the combustion chambers, which in turn reduces the peak temperatures during combustion, and that reduces the production of poisonous, polluting oxides of nitrogen emitted into the atmosphere.

There may well be more economical ways of fixing your car, but newer engines tend to have more complex, more expensive to fix, EGR systems, hence the question about the age of your car.

I'm afraid I know nothing worth mentioning about the EGR systems on cars as young as yours, so I'd suggest you have a browse/search around in the Mk2 Fabia section looking for threads relevant to your problem.

Good luck with it.
