Strange idle and engine shake with my skoda octavia vrs 2.0 tfsi

Featured Replies

Yeah same here, about 4 hours work by the looks of things- I would love to tackle it, but don't trust myself that much!

I'll let you know how the costs breakdowns when I have the car back tomorrow

I've just googled how to do this as I want to tackle it too.Taking my car into the my local indy garage on Saturday so I'll ask then, but I am keen to have a go myself.  I have a few issues with my car but I think a lot of them could suggest coked up valves.

Is this applicable to the TSI engine too?

Also, what constitutes a "good" socket set?  The only socket toolset I have is this:

Will that suffice for getting to and removing the inlet manifold?  If not what tools can you recommend for a novice like that wants to have a go at intermediate DIY?

Also, are the injector removal tools very expensive?

According to http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Volkswagen_Golf_GTI_Mk_V/50-ENGINE-Intake_Manifold_Removal/50-ENGINE-Intake_Manifold_Removal.htm you'd need the following tools-

  T30 Torx, 10mm, 13mm, 14mm, 17mm wrench, 5mm triple square, 19mm twelve point socket and driver

The triple Square would unlikely be in your kit I'm afraid as I similar kit myself (I did, however, pick up some triple squares from Lidl a while back)

I have not looked into injector removal, but as far as I know they usually just come away with the manifold. The injector seals and mainfold gasket would need changing if you plan on going ahead with this job

Thanks mate.  I fancy some decent ish tools so I can do things like break pads etc myself.  I have only cheapy halfords stuff currently.  I know you get what you pay for, but I won't need expensive tools as I won't use them often enough.  Would a sub £100 set from Halfords be a good idea?

I've found this video. It's designed for the Audi/VW 2.0 TSI, but it looks 99% the same as our skodas.  Looks like a lot, but I'm pretty confident I can do it myself.

My car is also shaking slightly when idle and the revs bounce anywhere between 500-800rpm when just sat there (when warmed up). Mine is a different engine though... It's the old 1.6 MPI petrol. No idea what causes it and have just learned to live with it for now as the car still drives fine. I doubt I'll have it for much longer anyway.

Spoke to my local indy to get a quote for new gaskets etc, but he thinks it needs stripping down and head removed to clean valves themselves. Not going down that route as it'd cost hundreds. Going to get them to check for codes and maybe reset the ECU first. I've got new plugs coming too.

Well, I've just had a message from my garage who has told me the job will cost £80

In that cost, I've also had wheel alignment and a switch replaced (not related to this issue), along with diagnostics etc done too for that price- I've not yet picked it up, but am well happy with that price.

I'll ask him how much the inlet manifold job alone would have cost just for reference

That's just for removing the manifold to expose the valves and clean the inlets though? My local garage said I'd really need to strip the entire engine now, remove the valves and clean them induvidually.   He said it'd be about 8 hours so the labour costs would be horrific.  Personally I'd rather just have a go myself at cleaning the valve inlets and injectors nozzles.

Don't get me wrong, this would be a big, challenging task for me, but I'm willing and looking forward to having a go.

Yeah, that was just for cleaning the manifold and not going any further...8 hours work sounds about right for doing all that you mention!

Good luck with it all!
