2nd Service then issues..

Featured Replies

The car went in for its 2nd service last Monday which should have been routine.  The car before the service has been running really well no issues.

Anyway picked it up and brought it home.  Did a couple of little runs but nothing to get it up to temperature and give it a good run.

On Saturday needed to take my little boy to football.  Hits the outside lane of the M62 doing about 70pmh and 2 miles in the car loses power EPC light so have to pull over to the hard shoulder.  Definitely a misfire as the car now sounds like a 3 cylinder.

Turned off the engine gave it a couple of minutes then restarted and all good.  Set off but the car just doesn’t feel as smooth and sounds rough.  Anyway gets home and looks under the bonnet and sees oil all over the filler cap and underneath the plastic cover.  Checks oil and it’s also low so need to put in 0.7 litre.

Now I check the oil every week and the area around the filler cap is always clean and was full before the service.  (Added some pics of what it looked like after service)

It’s back in the garage today and I raised the issue about the oil and misfire so will see what the outcome is when they ring me back.

I wondering if they put a new ECU map during the service and gave it to the new recruit to do.  The service lady could not tell me as the technician that did the service would need to ring me...

Still waiting...

Ask directly,

Was the car put on the Diagnostics and was a Skoda Software Update done at the time of the service,

and was anything else other than a Oil / Filter Service and General Inspection Service done?

& if a Software Update was done why was that not told to you and on the Service Report.

Ask how much oil was put in at the Service?

What does it show on your Invoice, is it 3.6 Litres VW504 00 Long Life. ?

That's not gd Paul. Hioe they sort it for u. Mines going in for a service 2moz.

Update.

The second service was a oil filter, inspection only and no updates.  The oil was not changed or topped up so its a misery to how the oil has appeared around the filler cap.  (Perhaps I have got so use to checking the oil i did it while sleep walking)

EPC light and what I thought was a misfire was not.  It was a voltage drop that was registered on the ECU.  The car dropped below 2 volts @ 3500rpm doing motorway speeds which caused the problems.  All electrical connections have been tested but no faults found.

I have got the car back with a one to watch and if it happens again bring it back or call Skoda assist...

Anybody had a voltage drop before? Done a quick check on the forums but couldn't match anything..

Confused.

All sound odd.  Sounds like not actually true from the Dealership telling you.

How can it be a Oil Filter, Inspection Only Service & yet no Oil was changed or topped up.???

(Are they saying the Unscrewed and Removed the Oil Filter, changed it, and never changed the Oil,

or Topped Up after removing a Filter with some oil still in it, & i take the New Filter and the Old one were Silver

& removing it no Oil Leaked.)

BIT OF AN ERROR THERE IN THE WORKSHOP NOT TOPPING UP AND YOU THEN NEEDING TO
PUT IN 0.7 Litres.

*So did the Technician that did the Service speak to you, and is his / her name on the Service Inspection report?*

Is your car on Variable Servicing and at a 2nd Service you are not changing the Oil & Filter?

What was done at the first service, was Oil & Filter changed then.?

How many miles to the first service, and how many miles from first until now?

So how many miles on your car,

and do you not think there was a Misfire from a failing Spark Plug?

& Is there not actually a Software Update for your car, and have they checked?

& was your car checked on the Diagnostic at the Service as it should have been?

...............

IS YOUR CAR ON A SERVICE PLAN SO YOU HAVE PAID FOR SERVICES, & THE WORK IS NOT GETTING DONE,

OR DID YOU PAY THEM FOR WHAT WAS DONE LAST WEEK?

How on earth does someone do an oil filter inspection without at least topping up the oil?

Anything other than an external 'yes, there's an oil filter there' surely involves unscrewing the thing and with it tends to come at least a bit of oil?

So I am on a PCP with 3 years free servicing. The inspection due in 10 days’ notice appeared on the display so booked it in.  Checked the settings option on the MFD and the oil change said 362 days but inspection was 1300 miles or 10 days.

Checked it definitely a new filter (Silver One) but the only paper work you get is just an inspection sheet with tyre tread wear and other observations. All the other information is logged on the system.

The first service @ 9400 miles was an oil, filter, inspection and ECU update and I paid for new plugs.  This one was done @ 17200 miles.

I have asked for the service manager to call me back about the oil.  Like you said I think they have just missed or forgot something but its poor practice if they didn’t top up the oil.

Misfire – If they car lost voltage briefly to nearly stall the car and then was ok again would this have shut down any of the cylinders?  When I got to the hard shoulder and revved it slightly it did sound like Gatling gun…

The only misfire I have had before was when starting from cold.

So the Servicing at PDI should have been changed to Fixed / Annual 272 Days / 9,400 miles (10,000)  and not left on Variable / Flexable.

So it needs the Oil & Filter changed, and if really they changed a filter and not the oil, they are at it.

?

Are they not Servicing cars to the Skoda Service Schedule / Guidelines and to what Customers have paid for?

As to who ever they had checking the Misfire,

their job at the Service was to check the car on the diagnostic machine.

1st Service is Minor Service,  or was called this.

2nd Service Major Service,  'Inspection Service',  as full as they do.

Now the Services seem to be much the same and Variable Servicing and cars not doing many annual miles is confusing things.

All in it seems a comedy of errors.

The Spark plugs need Inspected at least.

If they are fine then that is all good.,

But the bunch you are dealing with can not be trusted to know their ar53 from their elbow.   Or to be honest about it.

At a Volkswagen Group Franchised Dealership doing a Scheduled Service 'Do not pay extra' for Software Updates / Enhancements that should be done as part of the Service anyway when available.  ie ECU Updates for Engine Management with the likes of a 1.4 TSI / TFSI Twincharger.

That is why you pay Main Dealer prices, to get the kind of Service that maybe Independents can not offer unless paying VWG

for Licencing.

Then even VW Specialists can or may have the Diagnostic Equipment, Updates, the TPI's and can even carry out Warranty work.

Re Paperwork that you get even though there is no Service Book with many cars & the Information is on computer,

should be the Cars Condition Report / Health Check & Tyre Depths.

But it should include the Parts List, so you Know if a Pollen Filter or Air Filter or Fuel Filter Was Replaced,

If they do not replace the Air Filter at 1st or 2nd Filter why should it get replaced at the 3rd Service as a car might be handed back.

(Often the Air Filter is never even looked at because they say it is 40,000 miles, 60,000 miles or what ever.)

Anything on the Computer is there to get Printed for a Driver / Owner to put in the Folder and keep to have Records,

Your car, your information and Parts Paid for and maybe never fitted.

Get an email off to Skoda CS Uk to investigate, service and post service events. Get your car logged onto Skoda UK system and have a case No. Raised. Then copy your dealership a copy and raise an email to the service manager / Master Tech mention in detail your unhappiness with treatment and to recognise that the fault had safety implication.

Just wanted to update the voltage drop issue.

I think I found the cause of the voltage drop.

I had installed a Dashcam – (a cheap one from China) a couple of days before the EPC light and voltage drop happened.  It was plugged into the 12v socket near the handbrake but has been disconnected since it happened.  So I plugged it all back in last week and guess what!  It happened again.

So I took the power supply out of the socket and checked the unit.  It has fuse in it but was all black and had blown out.

I have been to Maplin and bought a new one and hasn’t happened since.  I don’t know to much about car electronics or what a blown fuse would do the car systems but could be a lesson for using cheap Chinese electronics..
