Goodbye to Skoda

Featured Replies

Not really leaving but getting rid of the Octavia.  We have decided to downgrade to a one car (one motor bike) family.  As I am now retired (again) we don't need two cars so are chopping in both the MX5 and the Octavia for a VW Golf Convertible.  My wife likes to have the roof down whenever she can all year round and she would miss it if shecouldn't so the option of getting rid of the MX5 and keeping the Octavia wasn't there.  I wanted to stick with a DSG gearbox and we need somewhere for the dog in a car so the Golf works for us all.

I must have a thing about Golfs as this will be the 7th I have owned!  Anyway I had a look on a couple of VW forums and they are a bit quiet.  Checked one today and there was nothing new since yesterday!  This place has been a lot of interest and fun and I have received a lot of good advice, banter and the odd (and I do mean 'odd') argument while I have been here.  So I am staying but not as a Skoda owner but then that seems quite acceptable thankfully.

So apologies if the title raised any hope for certain individuals. :D

So picked up the Golf this morning.  Just have to change the number plate over now.  Oh and clean it myself then I know it has been done properly.  Ordered and received some Gtechniq I1 for the roof and I will have the wheels off and clean and seal them then I know they are done for the winter.

At last I can drive a convertible without my head sticking above the windscreen.  Wife had a little tear saying goodbye to the MX5 but I think she will be more than happy with the Golf.

Looks very nice indeed.

Nice! My mother in law has got one that looks identical to that one. Her alloys are slightly different though.

What engine is it? 1.6?

Hers is quite well specced with auto wipers, auto lights, high beam assistance, cruise, climate, winter pack (heated seat, headlamp washers and heated jets), leather seats, Sat nav (same of Amundsen plus with Bluetooth etc), MFD (think that's what they call Maxidot on the VW).

It is 2.0 diesel GT Phil.  Not quite as much spec as your MIL's.  Mine hasn't a winter pack but has all the usual stuff including parking sensors front and rear but the stereo doesn't seem as good as the Octavia's Bolero although it is DAB.  I only had a short drive in it as I needed the wife to familiarise herself with it before she went to work in it this afternoon.  She did ring up to say she could not get the roof to go up but then saw that I hadn't closed the boot properly (hate slamming doors) so that was stopping it.

Seems quite quick but obviously not as quick as the VRS which was petrol.  I may get it chipped as that will give it 30% more BHP and torque which should make it very handy.
