why is my octavia beeping at me? spanner symbol in dash.

Featured Replies

I've not long owned my octavia vrs, it's a 2006 per facelift 2.0 tfsi model. As soon as i bought it i had it serviced inc cambelt and water pump. Before the service the few times i drove the car it would beep once on start up and display the spanner symbol in the dash, also, rather than displaying the trip mileage it would sometime show the car's total mileage. One thing i can't remember is whether or not i had a count down mileage showing when the spanner symbol was there on start up. Anyway, i've only done a thousand miles since the service and now its beeping at me again and displaying the spanner symbol, no count down mileage though, just sometime showing the total cars mileage rather than the trip mileage.

I read the owners manual and did a reset of the service interval but now, after a week or so, the car is beeping and showing the spanner symbol again. Is that spanner only there to indicate the car needs a service based on a time/distance type calculation or can it warn of other issue such as low oil? Did i make a mistake when reseting the service interval? When i reset it shoudl i see it showing a mileage to go of 10,000 or anything obvious?

Cheers

Take it to any VAG garage or any good indy garage and they will reset the beep and the spanner.

so it's not something i can do myself?

Hold the odo reset button down while you turn on the ignition. Release the button and twist it once to the right

Worked on mine

yeah that's what i thought i did last time, but after a week it starting beeping again. I'll try it again.

And read your handbook if you have one. Always a good place to start. Apologies if you don't have one.

Resetting the service interval using the push button on the dash resets it to a fixed service interval (10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever is reached first).

There is a specific way of doing it though.

The confusing bit for me suggests that you are resetting it correctly as the spanner and beep disappear, but only for a week?

If it is reappearing after a week then there must be a fault.

The procedure for resetting the service light is as follows:

Resetting service interval display using the reset button ⇒ page 13, fig. 2 on the trip counter:

• Switch off the ignition, press the reset button of the trip counter for distance driven and hold it down.

• Switch the ignition on and release the reset button. Now turn the reset button to the right. The service interval displays are reset.

okay so i read the handbook again last night and one thing that doesn't make sense to me is that i get the beep and flashing spanner but no written  details in the shape of mileage or number of days, which the handbook says i should see. It just beeps, flashes the spanner then brings up the trip mileage as normal, or ocassionally (something like 1 in 4 start ups) it brings up the cars total mileage for the entire journey and doesnt show the trip mileage at all.

I've just reset the service indicator as per the handbook instructions in Silver1011's post above. Mileage is at just over 65500 and this post is time/date stamped so we'll see how many miles/days pass until it starts beeping at me again. I've not started the engine but turning the ignition on since the reset doesn't result in a beep and the spanner doesnt show.

There is a video on YouTube how to exactly reset the service interval. follow it and you shouldn't have the problem

right so yesterday the beep and symbol came back with the mileage now at 66200 and 7days after the last reset. I've taken a short video to show exactly what i'm seeing, there's just a beep and spanner symbol, no count down or days or mileage.

That isn't right, you should see the number of miles left followed by the number of days left before the service is due.

Has anyone made any adjustments to your car using VCDS?

Try this procedure to see if you can view the number of miles / days left until it thinks it needs a service...

To display the distance still to be driven and the days until the following service is required:

• Switch on the ignition and press the reset button  ⇒page 13, fig. 2 for more than 2 seconds.

A key (spanner) symbol is displayed on the display of the counter for the distance driven.

The remaining distance to be driven will be indicated for 10 seconds next to the key symbol and then the remaining number of days to the due date for the service inspection.

Mine is the same as that but when the beep first sounds & the spanner symbol is displayed the mileage countdown displays 900miles then 800miles etc until its down to 100 miles & then it does what yours is doing & beeps on start up with the spanner symbol, mine has no "days to service left" only the countdown of miles in 100's from 900 to 100 then the spanner symbol. I reset mine as per the owners manual & its fine until the next service is due.
