Rear lights for trailer

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Heaven't posted here before but admire the amount of knowledge that people here show.

Got a 1.4 TSI 2010 and would like to install a towing hook.

While playing with Ross-Tech VCDS, I found that there is an option to switch off the rear lights while towing a trailer.

This brings me to believe that there is a wire/connector that can accept a signal from the trailer wiring (when connected) and (maybe) outputs the rear lights signals to to the trailer's connector.

Can someone advise, if true, its location and wiring.

Many thanks in advance.

It's probably part of the genuine wiring kit for trailers, an example is here: http://www.cars-equipment.com/www/en/shop/skoda/oem-1k0907383f-hitch-kit-tow-bar/

This is an extra module that talks to the car over canbus and can report when a trailer is attached. Much better than the bypass relays you can buy and if you have ESP it can also take the trailer into account and act appropriately.

Thanks langers2k.

Followed your link and learned so much about this issue. :-)

I wouldn't want my rear lights deactivated when I've got a trailer on. If a trailer light went out or was working poorly, a following driver noticing the cars lights could prevent an accident.

The only exception might be if I were using a big box trailer where the reflection back was causing me a visibility problem, but I still don't think I would.

It is normal to just switch off the rear fog light on the car when the trailer is attached.
