Wheels 215/45R17: Will 225/45R17 Tyres fit?

Featured Replies

Struggling to find all season tyres for my wheels (215/45R17)...

Wondering if 225/45R17 tyres will fit my 17" rims (7J)?

Will it void the manufacturer s warranty or insurance?

Cheers all

There really is lots of choice in 215/45 R 17 All Season or even Winter / Cold weather tyres.

You really need wider rims to be fitting 225/45 R 17.

Check the various tables online on Tyres and Rim Widths.

Might need to re-phrase "Struggling to find best buy and cheaper all season tyres from here ..."

General consensus is that you go DOWN a width with winter tyres, not up!!

I can live that!

Just checked - no 205/45R17 :(

Are those VAG Alloy wheels wearing 225/45 R 17's definitely 7J and not 7.5J ?

From the Left are 17 x 7J rims with 205/40 R 17 & 215/40 R 17,

& on the right are 225/45 R 17 on 7.5J rims.

Left to right, Summer, M+S & Winter  tyre.

Just checked...

205/50R17 are £10 more per 225/45R17 :( :( :(

A quick check online shows:

7J idealy take 205-215

But, can take MIN 195 and MAX 225.....

But as Graham says best to go down one unit on Winters (and the Nokian Weatherproof though all-season tyres, are really winter tyres)....

YEP standard fit on certain VAG MQB...........

I also got my replacement two sets of TD PR3 & 1.2 in 17x7J 225/45R17 for both summer & winter sets.

The old saying of going down a size/width for winter does not apply to todays modern tyres & cars.....................

I hated the handling difference on the Fabia as I had 185R14 for winter & 195R15 for summer & it made a difference, so I now have both sets the same & it does not affect the cars handling

hmmmm...I prefer 225 and cheaper too....what shall I do?

The main reason for having a small rim & wide tyre is it protects the rim.....it does provide more sideways squirm though as there is more lateral flex, but a more comfortable ride. This size combination is the minimum of what is acceptable............

Not the same car, but I both over sized the width and profile of the tyres on my car 215/50/R17 to 225/55/R17, without any issues. a 7J tyre is rated as OK for 225mm, 215 is supposedly ideal, and 205 a bit small.

Why? you may ask - well I was replacing the old 15" steels with the alloys that the car SHOULD have come with from new, but had heard bad things about the ride quality on 50 profiles, and also didnt like the fact it would make the car speedo over-read even more than the 10-12% it already did.

The car now rides smoothly and the speedo is only a few mph out at speeds below 60 (3mph out at 30mph, 5mph out at 70mph but  for some strange reason smack on at 40mph).

It was REALLY difficult to find out any info, even a garage mech scorned my question and said it wouldnt work, I finally found the answer on a Japanese enthusiast website that listed all the possible tyre/wheel combos that would fit my car, right up to 255/30/R20.

Just be aware than on full lock you have reduced the clearance between the wing and the tyre a bit, so dont go lowering the springs too much.

Cheers Chris!

I think I will go for the Michelin CrossClimate.

It's unfortunately it's not been reviewed wildly yet (not included in the Autoexpress 2015 all season tyres test etc..)

Nokian Weatherproof I would have go for and slightly cheaper too..

EXCELLENT in snow and wet but, OK in dry.

But still a winter tyre with summer qualities...

Whereas the michellin cross climate is a summer tyre with winter qualities (better for the UK)

It scores very good in snow/wet and dry...

So, CrossClimaye it is! :)
