Brake squeal?

Featured Replies

I replaced my front discs and pads with mintex ones just before the summer. Everything seems to be working fine but over the past couple of weeks I've been getting quite a bit of squeal when braking - mainly at lower speeds although that may be because I can't hear it at higher speeds.

Anyone know what might be causing it and should I be concerned or not really?

Cheers

Mine do this, can be quite annoying!

A little copper grease on the contact surfaces between the the pads and calliper housing usually does the trick. Maybe an idea to clean/scrape all the baked on brake dust out of them while they're off and re-grease the sliding pins.

Have had similar, turned-out to be rear pads on the nearside squealing..

This was down to the fact the local indy garage not applying ANY grease to area's requiring copper-based grease.

I put some gc on therewgen I fitted the new pads... will it have been 'used up' (for want of a better phrase) already?

Try it again, give everything a good clean and scrape out. A few old rags, a small flat head screwdriver and some break cleaner from Halfords should do the trick. Concentrate on the areas where the pads touch the actual calliper housing and give the piston surface a good clean up too, if it has surface corrosion this should just scrape/sand off. You want to try get the contact surfaces as clean as possible to try and prevent any sort of noises.

Ive replaced my mintex with borg n bec now as i noticed the mintex suffered badly from squeel despite doing all i could to clean all surfaces etc.

I found when the mornings started getting damp colder.where they had slighest bit of surface rust appear they would be terrible but once discs were warm and clean they were fine. Had to replace due to warping in the end
