Featured Replies

hi

my car is running bad jumpy and miss-firing ( worse at low revs )

was told maf sensor had gone as when i unplug the plug on maf sensor it runs smooth

but obvious loss of power

i brought a new maf sensor but still the same when i plug it in

any other ideas?

had just changed the thermostat housing 2 days before this started

not sure if this could have effected anything

thx lee

Genuine MAF or Fleabay special?

coil packs also - check to see if recall has been done

yes coil packs done 2 years ago took it in myself to skoda bilston

yes cheap fleabay special but was told they was ok as on jobseekers so took the cheaper option

I'd still get the coils checked, one could have still gone.

Also, buy cheap you buy twice...... Go and get an oem genuine one.

I just had a similar sounding problem. It needs to be checked with vcds. My maf was out and needed resetting. Im about to run it properly tonight and see if it comes back...

have you checked your downpipe so it dont have a leak before the cat,

mine is leaking from the flex and it had misfiring when my civinco box was connected

i just ordered a new 3 inch one with 200 cell cat earlier today

People have had issues with non genuine maf from day 1 in the past, it's not unheard of. The fact that it's smooth when unplugged says something. Could be the connector, hows the pins and wires?

It does sound like a maf issue, but as said coils are worth checking, also coolant temp sensor can give similar symptoms. Does anyone you know have a gen maf you could trial on yours?

Vcds scan would prove useful too

I definitely agree with checking the coilpacks. You MUST check all 4 in one sitting. If you can pull one out and the engine doesnt die then that'll be the culprit. Mine had genuine coilpacks fitted under a mechanics instruction at a fair cost to find out it wasnt them so the BEST advice, by far, is pay for a scan on vcds. Not only is it cheaper its also going to tell you exactly what the problem is.

Another bit of advice is YOU know the car, your guess is always a good starting point. I advised the mechanic that my coilpacks were fine, I even offered a bet on it. I was right but I never suspected a genuine maf going "skewiff" and neither did anyone else. Only vcds found the problem.

The problem shows as a persistent p1296 even though you have a perfectly fine temp sensor and thermostat.

Its symptoms are an intermittent lumpy engine, mostly after a long run out or heavy labour on the engine (be careful labouring the engine as I found my cv had a weakness and exploded it). At idle it will tick fine and then "bump" every so often. You can hear the bump at the exhaust. The bump is a misfire. These misfires give you p0300, P0301, p0302, p0304. One cylinder will not give a misfire code, i don't know why. For me the cylinder was cylinder 3 (p0303). The bump is accompanied by a flicker of the interior lights.

After a while, starting the engine from cold even on a warm day activates the secondary air injector which is a loudish whistle from the engine bay. Its job is to heat up the catalytic converter. This kicking in most likely is a sign of air induction problems so look at the maf or intake gasket. My car doesn't do this now.

I hope this helps someone because it did my head in for weeks on end!.
