Trip computer gremlins?

Featured Replies

I used to run the long term trip (No. 2) on my old Octy for the full tank and reset at each fill. I tried this on the Octy 2 and so far it has reset itself randomly at every fill. It bugs me because then the computer MPG for the full tank resets so I can't compare the two.

As I said it is random, sometimes it will reach 580 miles and then reset, others it gets to 100miles and does it and so on.

Mine reset once so interested to see if anyone comes up with any reason.

Only thing I can think is a bit of a low battery.

Was thinking this myself, but will have to wait for the cold weather to see.

If the battery is disconnected it resets the figures so it could be a dodgy battery or connection perhaps.

I had a similar issue with trip computer resetting at random, often accompanied by warning lights coming on and off at the same time. In the end I had to have the instrument cluster replaced. Fortunately it was done under warranty.

Have been keeping an eye on this. Since last refill I have clocked up approx. 600 miles on the second trip (reset it at refill). Travelled round trip of about 74 miles (on trip 1) yesterday evening and noticed when I finished that trip 2 had reset sometime during the journey and was only reading 56 miles total instead of the 600+ it should have been. Traced it back and it seems to have reset itself mid journey with no reason or any other indication at the time. I had no warning lights, the car was driving at constant speeds of 40-60mph and absolutely nothing out of the blue happened.

Getting more confused by this. Also have been checking it every morning even when the car is now cold starting and it never reset, so ruled out a low battery.

I would suspect something's failed in the instrument cluster. Like you I kept a diary of when the reset occured, noting time, speed and ambient temperature. There seemed no pattern, it was just as you describe - random. And very frustrating. The first time it was also a bit scary as the array of warning lights popped up at the same time!

Trip 2 also resets if the driving time since last reset exceeds 20 hours. To do your tank full check of over 600 miles your average speed would need to be over 30 mph average.

My trip 2 is currently reading 540 miles and 17 hours 24 minutes, an average of 31 mph

Here is the text from the driver's manual:

" Total-trip memory (memory 2)

The total distance driven memory gathers data from any number of individual journeys up to a total of 19 hours and 59 minutes driving or 1 999 kilometres driven, 99 hours and 59 minutes driving time or 9 999 km driven in vehicles with an Information display. The memory is deleted when either of these limits is reached and the calculation starts from anew."

Incidentally I found there is still a reasonable variance in mpg between tank fulls so I run an excel spreadsheet to spot trends rather than use trip2 readout.

I need to check but I thought the reset rollover time on the Mk 1 Octavia was 100 hours.

I wonder what they mean by "information display"? Perhaps it resets at 100 hours if you have a maxidot display and at 20 hours if you have a bog standard display.

Didn't know about the 20 hours, thanks. The octy 1 def never reset between tanks.

its just curiosity to c how far out the display is from actual. I brim it regularly and get consistently 59-61 mpg so happy with that.
