Octavia Diesel won't fire - any clues?

Featured Replies

Hi all

I'm just wondering whether anyone here has any ideas that might help me - my 1999, Octavia 1.9 TDi (110PS) suddenly died today just as I was pulling out of a junction. It would turn over but wouldn't fire again.

The recovery guy who came couldn't get anything out of the debug connector and had to arrange for the car to be taken to my local garage (I could have had it brought home but wasn't sure I'd have much success getting it going).

The garage haven't looked at it yet as they were closed by the time we got there but in the mean time I just thought I'd ask here. I know there's not much to go on, but a couple of other things to mention which may or may not be relevant:

The recovery guy checked all fuses and they were OK

The glow plug indicator isn't coming on

The recovery guy got it to fire by spraying easy start in the air intake

I've occasionally heard clicking sounds (like relays switching) coming from the area behind the light switch. I think I heard this just after it died too.

As I said, I know this is not much to go on, but thought I'd just check in case there's a common, known fault with this model that gives these symptoms.

Thanks for reading and thanks in advance if you can offer any help!

Just had something similar with wife's Merc, turned out to be fuel pump relay.

If the glow plug light isn't coming on try replacing the 109 relay. Should be about £15 for a new one.

It's the one with 109 printed on it, but it's called something completely different.

you say it fired with the easy start, did it continue running?

I had a similar incident on an Audi 1.9, would turn over and sometimes catch for a split second before dying. Turned out to be the immobiliser pickup had failed (wiring near ignition switch). £15 for a new one. The immobiliser light was staying on.
