Hello all!

Need a bit of advise. My dad wants to buy either the Merc S class, or the BMW 7 series, so I need decide which is a better car to purchase.

Both would be brand new, S class would be the S500L, and the 7 series would be the 750Li. Which would you go for and why?

BMW 750li. Because it's a BMW. And you won't have to worry about service.

I agree with Mil.

BMW, because all you ever see when you go above 5 series/E class, are S-class mercs and the 7 series will stand out.

Neither.

The BMW is ugly on a stick.

The Merc looks better , but I'd prefer an A8

My personal preference would be for the Merc, BUT if I was parting with cash for one, it would be the BMW. Hear too many horror stories about declining Merc build quality, poor customer service, etc.

Rob.

I agree with ditching both for an A8.

Go for a Jag XJ myself, technically not as good but 10x more character. After that I'd go for an A8 rather than a 7 Series or an S Class

Would be the Beemer if I had to have one of them. The Merc QA problems would put me off the S class. The first thing I would be thinking is are we not getting close to Maserati Quattroporte money here? Failing that a Jag XJR. Both would be above either beemer or merc on my shopping list.

The Maserati looks absolutely beautiful in the metal.

Chris

Isn't there a new S-Class imminant - or is it out already here

For that sort of money, I'd go for an A8 myself. But with a choice between just those two, I'd go for the Beemer.

If push came to shove I would always take the Merc.

However as an ex-Merc driver (never the heady heights of your Dad's choice though) I must say that the build quality of both is now disapointing. Back in the old days you chose a Merc because of its solid engineering and build quality and brilliant dealers, and were willing to pay for them. Not nowadays I am afraid. Engineering is no better than average and build quality is iffy. As for the dealers - appalling - all show and no go. For those who think their service is good now all I can say is you should have seen it before!. The only reason to choose a Merc now is badge snobbery.

If you want all the old qualities of a Merc then it has to be a top of the range Lexus I am afraid. Rock solid build quality and engineering leading to total reliabilty. Dealers that treat you as people and don't look down their noses at you.

Just look at the results of the recent Top Gear and Which survey results. Where did Mercs come and where were Lexuses (or is the plural Lexi). No contest.

neither and as the Dr said, A8 all the way :)

You "only" get a 4.2 litre engine where the BM and Merc have a 5.0 but it does cost less as well.

There is of course the 6.0 engine as an option for the audi but then it's a good few grand more expensive.

Of the two I'd take the Merc. Given a free choice, I'd take either the Maserati Quattroporte or an A8 4.2 TDI quattro

Without a shadow of a doubt I would take the BMW - they are just the ultimate. Merc's (unless you go AMG which we are not talking about here!) are just boring old OAP cars (hence Jon would have one ;) ), Audi are so horribly clinical these days it's like driving a dentists surgery.

:haha:

I'm so old I'd take the 4 door Ferrari :D

A8.

S-Class is too old, BMW 7-series is too ugly and has the worst i-drive of any IMHO

Neither ! The A8 is a good shout, or how about something even more exotic for that sort of money. If I had to choose it would be the BMW.

Both weird cars.Normally bought by people who like to sit in the back as opposed to drive them;)

Get a Bentley GT thing:thumbup:

Phaeton. I dirve an S-Class quite ofter and its lovely.. not as fun as the 7 series on the back lanes. A8 understeers but build is "special" however the Phaeton is an A8 for A6 money.

Cheapskate :D

Wouldn't have you as my chauffeur.I'd be all over the back seat:D

Of the two I'd take the Merc. Given a free choice, I'd take either the Maserati Quattroporte

Agree...S500....quality not that bad compared to the lower models...apparently.

BMW....well it's a Beemer ain't it.;) Ugly as anything....although if it was an Alpina B7..well that's different.

Masser...lovely...if free choice...deffo over either....although I do like the Bentley Conti GT...although it's a coupe.

Another vote for the Jag and A8.

But out of the two it would be the BMW I hate mercs with a passion

Don't Bentley do the Conti GT running gear in a saloon body? Silver spur or something? Besides, it's a lot more money.

As for the red baron as a chauffeur, not a chance, he hasn't got the skill to drive a pointy stick up a dead dog's ar5e :haha:
