Can anyone help? I've been running windows 10 developer preview and am now trying to upgrade to the full released version. I've downloaded the stuff and its now asking me for a windows 10 product key?? I can' seem to find a solution online. Can anyone help?

 

 

Can you not reinstall your previous OS and upgrade then to 10

Think your stuck Chris, I had this same issue on my laptop that I were running the dev preview with..

In the end up I put Windows 7 back on then upgraded to 10 FOC

Thanks guys. I didn't back up when I went to win 10 dev from 8.1. Hopefully doing a factory reset will fix it.

It should have a partition when you installed the developer edition of 10

Although as far as I understand the product key is stored in the BIOS you could retrive it there was a web page that allowed you to download official windows versions

Or contact the manufacturer and see if you can obtain a system disk

What make is the computer BTW

I had to do the same changing hard disk.

There are no keys for the free versions. If youtry to extract them you find they all use the same key. MS has tied the OEM lience to the hardware. It generates a hash from the processor and mobo. For sopme reason they won't let you do a clean install even on the same hardware you have to upgrade.

 

You might need to reinstall 8 then use the ISO to upgrade again. MS should pick up the hardware config then and authorise the installation.

PITA but MS support were useless.

Think it's bricked. Tried doing a factory restore and it says no, files missing. Won't let me go back to a previous saved point either. Won't let me do any windows updates either. Stupid windows.

If you've got legitimate Win8 put that on but only as far as authenticating the install then run a Win10 ISO disk?

 

Have you tried using a Win10 ISO disk on top of the dev install or to repair what you've got?

I'm downloading the windows 8.1 install files..going to attempt to get back to that and then do the update to 10.

From the number of people on Briskoda using Win 10, it would seem that most of the worlds 6% using Win10 are Skoda owners (latest figures from internet metrics companies)

I think more people would be on it but the installer doesn't seem to work 75% of the time. All it does it download gigs of files then sit there making an error log that no one looks at (apart from me).

Can't even download the 8.1 files as my laptop reboots every few hours as I've not updated to the latest version. Flipping Microsoft!

From memory Win 8 has to be patched to a certain level before you can get access to 8.1 download.

You should be able to upgrade to 10 from 8. You just need the OS to have authenticated.

Just for reference Ms has a big W10 update in Nov.

 

One of the changes will allow clean installs with a genuine Win7/8 key although the story isn't explicit in mentioning OEM keys.

From this edition, if you have an unused Product Key for Windows 7 or Windows 8 it will allow you to install Windows 10 from a download as a clean installation. Previously, you had to install and activate the edition for which the Key applied and upgrade incrementally.
