MTEC brake discs, any good?

After a lot of reading on here (and other forums), I ordered some last week along with Mintex pads.

 

Worked out cheaper than Pagid or equivalent from ECP even with discounts applied.

Okay Dan, that'll do for me.

Cosmetic and standard types are the same cost, may as well go for a bit of 'bling'.

Make sure you've got a strong back if you've got a delivery like mine, heavier than I thought!!

Just need to find something to clean them up as they have a coating that needs to be washed off, any ideas?

Fairy liquid and hot water does the job just fine.

I'm running mtec discs and ebc red stuff pads, I'm loving them they look good and the pads have a really good bite on them once warmed up.

methylated spirits or turpss or petrol then rinse with dishwashing liquid

Knew they'd be a simple answer.....

I used mtec discs with green stuff pads on my mk2 pre fl vrs and only got about 9 thousand miles before a horrible noise started from the front under braking stripped the front to check it out the pads looked like new but there were no grooves left on the inside of the disc (piston side) of the caliper had to fit another set of discs and changed the pads back to oe Skoda ones just a heads up might have been a bad batch of discs that was about 4 years ago maybe they have changed the steel they use now

Anyone painted and lacquered the centre section of the discs so its body coloured or would this burn off with the heat?

Unless you zinc coat or plate the discs anything else will start to come off within 6 months and look pretty tatty.

I hammerite'ed mine 3 years ago and they look like new. as with any paint job, prep is the key. Degrease them with brake cleaner and allow to dry fully before fitting. Any paint on the braking surface is cleaned off the first time you brake.

I wouldn't do it on the face of the disc, just the inner parts

I paint mine with household grade spray enamal & it lasts forever but I know I don't get my brakes very hot.

 

Engine enamel  or the kits they sell to paint brake calipers works fine & takes the heat without issue

Took about 3 hours in total but I did thoroughly clean the Calipers and the inside of the wheels.

Feels a lot better ,,,,, or is it just auto suggestion.

Wayne  can you let me know if the pads leave a lot of dust on the wheels. I'm on original pads, and am looking for something with less dust - was looking at textar epads or ebc greenstuff. Have about 1/4 - 1/2 inch left on pads

I've only had then fitted about a week so I've no idea how much dust they'll deposit.

Brakes are brakes their designed to stop the disc turning and as such they wear material off the pads.

Not fussed about dust, the wheels get washed when the car has a shampoo.

Thanks Wayne, my car gets washed every couple of weeks, but the front wheels look black after a couple of days compared to the rears.

I can say that the fronts were dirtier that the backs but that's the nature of the beast, they do more work.

I've replaced the OEM pads with the mintex pads for no other reason than purchasing replacement discs that require new pads.

It's been five days since they were installed and I've not noticed any deposits on the wheels, that's not to say there aren't any but all looks normal as did the OEM stuff.

Got them on mine with mintex pads,seem to be OK to me,went for the cross drilled and grooved set
