Long list of Fabia VRS problems

Featured Replies

It is likely to have reared its head before now.

There are enough of the first built 200 cars that are in the UK have not had issues over the 5 years.

Could you go to what you know then.

When was it first registered in 2010?

Does the Orange sticker at the drivers side of the engine have a date on it?

Do you know the Warranty history from 2010.

Any record of a Engine Rebuild in 2010/11?

Any Record of a Breather Modification (Update) and a ECU Update.

Anything else done to it between 2010 & 2014 by Skoda UK under warranty.

?

How many former keepers, and was it first registered to a Dealer? (ie a Demonstrator.)

  • Obviously, you check it at first to see where the level shows, and if there is an issue, then you get that sorted.   Then you can enjoy the car and the noise and a bit of performance for not much mo

  • Apologies Wakey not sure if it's an aftermarket front and what is a PDC?  If it helps it has a white roof and gunmetal grey (almost black) alloys.  I will get some pics uploaded at some point soon.

  • That's ace - cheers for that i'll make sure i do give that a try and as said before i'm now going to start checking daily.    Whilst it is unknown as to what the level was when the light showed - i

My tyre pressure light came on today - only been driving it since Friday so had to look up what the dash light was. I was driving to the lakes so after a check to make sure I had no flats I just went on my way. Got to where I was going mentioned it to a work mate who lent me his tyre pressure gauge. Fronts were 38psi and both rears were 50psi. I thought his checker was faulty and checked later to confirm that the reading were correct. I'm fuming with the garage I bought my car at!!

You are probably right, what i mean is if it had reared it's head then i would of hoped the owner/Skoda had dealt with it before and the issue resolved. . . Obviously many ifs, ands & buts and the issue is still at hand now.

From what i remember - i am at work currently so i don't have anything to hand nor can i get to the car right now.

I am the 3rd owner although one is the original owner and the other is the dealer.

When i asked Skoda about any warranty work/recalls etc (i asked as seperate questions) - I was informed that none was carried out except the gearbox oil changed. Nothing like breather mods or engine transplants - nothing in the paperwork that i have to show any of this either.

I'll have a look for an orange sticker tomorrow though when i check the engine oil.

Also could you answer me a question just so it's plain and simple for a dummy like me - Does the check oil light come on at roughly the mark when there is 1.5 litres of oil left?

Jebus! What are they playing at when they can't even put correct pressures in the tyres!?

Was yours the same or a different garage? Have you got a VRS as well?

I hope you have no more issues with yours at the very least - although it's not very confidence inspiring when stuff like that happens.  :peek:

Not the same garage no, got mine from Evans Halshaw in Burnley. I was like WTF already?!! I had a boot full and a passenger in the back too. I couldn't believe it when I saw the gauge saying 50psi.

Mine has been in for the fix due to oil consumption, had its 10k service and another service at 17200 which was along with their '300 check' bit worried now that it might of had a bodged job due to the tyres. Especially when they tried ripping me off with he finance on it. Who can we trust these days to do a safe job?!

Yeah its a VRS 2013 plate.

On an early CAVE engine, the Oil Warning light might not even come on when there is no oil even on the bottom Orange ball of the dip stick,

and that might need 2 litres to get back to 3.6 litres in.

(when hot, and there is some Oil showing on the bottom orange ball, that is about 1.3-1.5 litres low on oil.)

Currently just as a trial i have 4 litres of Brand New Oil in a 2010 vRS. (5w 40 Oil)

Measured and weighed before putting in the engine.

Shows on the Dipstick Cold and Hot the same as 3.6 litres might.

Indicated oil temp is never getting up to 90*oC in ambient temps between, -2 & 12*oC at 70 MPH.

Jeez - so it's almost anyones guess then really if the light is so inconsistent.

As i said when i checked it (as soon as the check oil flashed onto the display) the oil was just below the hatched area - it was still on the orange ball and over it on the dipstick. But that was cold.

So does that mean i still had around 2 litres of oil in the engine?

Sorry to keep asking i'm just trying to get a rough idea of what capacity its at at the minimum mark of the hatched area, presuming it is actually 3.6 litres at the max mark.

You can not be sure where it is with 3.6 litres in with any of the engines.

You only know when you totally drain an engine, put a new filter in,

put exactly 3.6 litres in, run it then leave it until Stone cold,  parked on the flat.

Dip it Cold.  that is one level. You know where it is on the Dipstick.

Run it until the Oil indicated temp is above 50*oC.   80*oC is good.  Stop, wait 4-5 minutes & Dip,  then you have a Hot Check Level.

I do a Jabozuma check.

Stone Cold. Dip and see the Oil is above the Cross Hatch.

Put the key in, start the car,  stop right away, Dip it.  about 0.5 Litres is pumped up,  the Level then is usually the same as a Hot Check.

You have enough oil in,

before setting off on a journey. no need to stop, mess about checking etc.

Next time you want to check, do it Cold.

Try a Jabozuma check as well.

Gutted to hear about that it really is shocking that this day and age stuff like that continues.

Unfortunately i was quite ignorant to it before i came here - but it truly has opened my eyes.

I hope that was the only thing they overlooked for you - but if not, make sure you pin them to the wall for it.

But yep - my trust has seriously shattered, i've heard horror stories but i did seriously expect a lot better from Skoda/VAG.

Whilst it is unknown as to what the level was when the light showed - i am still very skeptical to what Robert Eardley's have said about the oil consumption.

I wasn't offered one at the time (but then again the service department had taken it upon themselves to go home leaving me in the lurch) - but i'm guessing they should have the paperwork regarding my oil consumption test - so i will endeavour to get myself a copy to look it over - as i've seen you advise others on this forum.

I'll be mentioning it to them when I take it in for a scratch repair and alloy referb that they owe me as part of the sale. I gave up my MK1 Fabia VRS to make room for this, which is a fantastic looking car, I just want it to live up to my expectations and not to be let down by some idiot who has rushed a job because he wants a brew. I bought the car cash so as soon as I get these cosmetic fixes done, the quicker I don't need to deal with them.

That's fair enough i don't blame you whatsoever - maybe a different garage/dealership for any further work eg. services for in the future then?

I think i'll be going specialist independent once my warranty is up at the very least.

Yeah ill be taking it to Simpsons Skoda in Nelson / Colne from now on I think. I usually take the car to my mate who has a garage and he's so passionate about cars he's the only guy I trust. But I on the next service it'll go to Skoda so I can see what they're like. Hopefully they'll know what they're doing.

I'll have my fingers crossed for you.

Let us know how you get on with them.

Will do mate when it's time. Nice one.

Booked in for next Thursday, the body shop said I'd get it back the same day as long as I drop it off at 0730. Will keep you posted.

Apologies for hijacking this thread

No problems - not necessarily hijacking, i can't update until beginning of November really anyway.

Hope all goes well - as previously stated, let us know how you get on.

Car went in at 0730 this morning giving me a good 4 mile walk home. I'll let you know how I've got on later. Fingers crossed as this company smashed my old house mates back window and it took him ages and many problems to get it sorted.

Should of got the car back last night at 5pm. They rang at 430pm saying it won't be ready until 1030am at the earliest today. People not being reliable is something I hate!

Sounds nice, early 30 mins heads up they gave you that you wouldn't get your car back (sarcasm if it's not readable).

Sorry to hear you're getting messed about.

Hope you've got your car back now and all is ok with it?

Got the car back yesterday at 5pm, I wasnt walking 4 miles to get it at 1030am so I waited for the girlfriend toget home. Workmanship was top notch, all 4 alloys and the scratch on the bumper all done, for free. happy with that, annoyed with the 30mins mins notice though. It was free so its all good, I wont be using them again though.

"Top notch workmanship", "all 4 alloys and the scratch on the bumper all done, for free" and "It was free so its all good" but with just 30 minutes warning the Garage wanted to (but didn't) delay return until the following morning and you will not be using them again.

Good luck with your search for the perfect, 100% reliable and apparently "free" garage.  I'm sure that when you find the Holy Grail they will be flooded with custom from readers here

'Apparently free' - well it was part of the deal when I bought the VRS. It had to have the alloys sorted and the scratch. So yeah it was free. Even though they promised to have it done when I picked up he car

Few other things, the fact that I agreed on 6% on the finance, that bumped up to 14.4 when the contract was to be signed. So I did the next best and bought it outright. Then I find out that my house mate has a service contractwith the same company who wouldn't replace his rear window that the smashed when it went in for a service, citizens advice and the threat with his solicitor sorted that out (took 5 attempts too).

I will continue to look for the holy grail, and when I find it, i'll try to remember your name so I can let you know. :-D

Aup, glad the cars back and seems to be up to a satisfactory level.

Whilst it seems somewhat pessimistic, yep it would appear that no garage seems to offer a service to everyones level.

Naturally different strokes for different folks with some services but a lot of garages just taking everyone for a ride as well. . .

I'm sure there would be people that flocked from far and wide if one such perfect garage existed, i'd be tempted myself!

On a seperate note. . .

When i pulled up the other day, i revved my engine as a bit of a laugh (was winding the missus up).

After i got out of the car, i'd noticed it seemed to of spat oil out of the tailpipe.

Now before the questions come rolling in. . . . no i cannot CONFIRM it was oil.

I've not looked at it since purely because i've not had the time and today is the first day i've driven since.

It was starting to get dark and i wasn't at home either so i couldn't exactly stick around to investigate further at the time either.

Does anyone have any thoughts/advice on this? What to investigate/check?

I'll naturally scout the forums but if anyone could point me in the right direction on here then that would be great.

Especially seeing as the car is going in on Monday next week so i can point it out to them as well without them shrugging it off. . .

If it blasted 'Soot' out the tail pipe after booting it, and after it has run around running a bit rich, that is no issue.

If it was spitting H20 out of the exhaust then again not an issue, because water / moisture can gather in the back box.

If it blasted 'Oil' out of the tail pipe that really is an issue, but highly unlikely.

Stop the car in Park with Hand Brake on,

and hold a sheet of paper near the tail pipe and get someone to rev the car if you are concerned.

You will see it it is Oil, but that would have to be passing a very hot catalytic converter.

.................

What is it going in for next week, to have an 'Official Oil Consumption test' done?
