Dashcam purchase

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, just looking for some advice on dashcams, looking for something of high quality.

So the question I have in particular

1)which is the best

2)where to buy from

3)recording feature when the car is parked is a must

Thanks in advance for any replies

Plenty of info in several threads on here.

I went for Transcend Drivepro 200, front and back screens. Under £90 each, including 16gb memory cards. Get good reviews on Auto Express and in Which? magazine. In Currys/PCworld or whatever, and Amazon.  Nice compact mounts, unlike some.

use Google to search for Dash Cam tests, Autoexpress and Which have done recent tests as have several of the computer mags.

In addition to posts on here have a look at the reviews on www.techmoan.com.

I've been using a mobius action camera for the last year or two and it's worked well so far.

It takes a little more setting up than dash cams with a screen but the quality is great and it's very discreet.

You may want to have a look at the Thinkware range. I have the Thinkware F750 Front & Rear dash-cam installed on my vRS and am very happy with the results. Very discrete, although I did have to turn some of the audible alerts off such as lane departure warning and fixed speed/red light camera as the alerts became very annoying.

I'm looking at multi channel cameras in preparation for receiving my Octavia. Quite fancy having front and rear, possibly a couple of cheapo novatek g1w at the sides too

I have the Blackvue DR650-GW 2 channel setup.  It wasn't cheap, but the video quality is very good, there's no screen directly connected to the camera, I just turn wifi on and connect to it via my iPhone or iPad.  Despite some of the criticism in the reviews, I haven't had a problem with de-sensing the DAB on my Octavia Scout either.

I bought the camera and a PowerMagic Pro from Blackvue.co.uk - they were very helpful when I asked about installation and even offered to have someone on standby at the end of the 'phone when I was installing it, however in the event, I didn't need the help, it was very easy to install.

I started with a 16Gb SD card, but now I have a 64Gb one.

What he said.

Not cheap but ultimately you get what you pay for.

IMO the best dashcam setup you can have.

If you have a smartphone an alternative option is to purchase the sat nav app Sygic, which is very good, but also has a number of in app purchases, one of which is a dash cam.

I think Sygic costs around £30 for lifetime maps, but it may have changed since I downloaded.  The beauty about it is the maps are stored on your phone, which is great if you drive abroad and therefore don't have to pay expensive roaming charges.  You can also buy other in app stuff like heads up display, which actually is a very cool feature and works brilliantly - the phone screen projects onto your car windshield.

I am a fan of the Mobius, but I would not deal with joovuu again, as their customer service is terrible.

Does the Mobius have the motion sensor?

No, unfortunately. I make do with the loop recording , it works for me like that, just wired into the ignition live, but if motion sensing is on your list of must haves, then the Mobius won't be suitable, I'm afraid. Shame, as it fits really nicely under the housing beneath the rear view mirror and is virtually hidden from prying eyes outside the car.

I half disagree with you. It doesn't have the motion sensor in the same way as some dedicated dash cams have parking mode, but it can be set to record on motion using the windows or mobile app. I previously had mine set like this so that it would record while I'm driving then for as long as the battery lasts while I'm parked.

Now that I've finally received my new car I'm planning on hard-wiring it via a power magic although I might upgrade from a Mobius to a Blackvue or similar dual camera setup.

Ah, good point xdq. Not used mine like that. ( though my original mobius was destroyed by a faulty underwater housing a few weeks ago. :( )

I figured that the sort of motion sensor being asked about, was one that saved the last clip in the event of a shunt.

That auto save function would come in handy when your camera is mounted out of arms reach.

Ive got a transcend 200 great bit of kit. the saving and playback function over the phone / ipad / tabled is crystal clear and vibration free.

Only problem is Ive recently upgraded to the Octavia VRS and the suction cup doesnt stick to the dot matrix around the mirror as it did with my previous octavia. Im loath to use the sticky pad option for fear of pulling the matrix off.

I've got Transcends front and back. Don't worry about the sticky pad - the plastic mount will break first. The sticky isn't there for life, it will come off without damaging the screen matrix - I've done it, both front and rear, to re-position the mounts.  If you get the mount off and the sticky pad's still there, it will gradually pull off. Just be careful and don't use anything metal! You will need new sticky pads though, and there's a wide range of similar tape in B&Q

Thanks for that. Illl swap mounts and give it a go . Shame not to be able to use the thing.

Has anyone found a way to get power for a dash cam from the console over the rear view mirror?

Check the new Garmin dashcams releasing on 28th of this month. I believe the models are garmin 30 and garmin 35
