ECU light on!

Featured Replies

Today I had an oil change with new Denso spark plugs,yellow-stuff pads, just front, fitted. A CV boot was split and I had that changed too. This evening I noticed the ECU light on. The car is running great, oil temperature where it should be,brakes good no miss fire just this wretched light on! Any ideas please.

Which light,  'EPC'  ?

or 'Engine shape' light,  Exhaust Emission Control light.

Who did the Spark Plug change?.

You best check out that the Ignition Coils are on OK. Connections good etc.

If the car was sitting running for a while you might get the 'Engine Shape' Light, Emissions.

With the EPC light, take care, get the fault diagnosed and do not boot the car,

you can end up in Limp Mode.   The Codes need checked, maybe cleared, then see where you are at.

The yellow engine shaped light. The garage chap said the spark plug change had been a nightmare so its possible, though the engine is running so smooth, that the coil pack needs looking at which i will do first light. I have ordered the tool for the removal of the coil packs enabling me to do future plug changes myself. My intentions are to keep the car very long term so it looks like my days "on the tools" are to be re-lived. Thank you as ever George for your input. Oh and the out going plugs after 20112 miles were all a very nice colour.Brake pads out had heaps of meat left so they can go in the "save just in case" box.

Hopefully when you go today the light is out.

I had a flashing 'Engine' / Emission light.   a few times yesterday after someone else that had driven it had a red  low oil pressure light & a Warning Message.

But the car had been sitting with the engine running lots while the car was parked up, and the Plugs were a bit oiled and sooted i suspect.

The oil did need changing, but really it was the Filter as well.

(Mahle) Filter @ Under £4, not a Silver VW/Audi one.)

New Air Filter in as well.

So i checked the codes, none. new Oil & filter in & all 4 DENSO plugs out and checked including gap, and they were as new @ 18,000 miles. But they were showing a bit of soot.

..................

As to the person that changed your plugs, hopefully all 4 plugs gaps were checked, then not dropped or knocked when putting them in.

I put a length of rubber hose over the top and put them in and get the thread on carefully that way, rather than using the Plug Socket to put them in.

I will be taking mine for a thrash later to see that all is well, then i am away on a 500 mile trip.

(i put in 4 litres of oil yesterday, but that is just how i have started filling them, and i am not recommending that anyone does the same. Once i see how it is, i might take some out, but the level is right cold and hot,

i will check later.)

It has now just done 60,000 miles.

........................

Check your Oil level today before starting the engine, and again hot if you get the chance.

Sometimes after an oil change it might use some in the first few hundred miles.

Light still on,oil level OK I specified a gap of .6 in writing as I have the bluespark tuning box( on lowest economy level). I gave the car a ten mile drive to see if the light might go out,but no joy. I noticed its started going between just over and under the 1000 rpm on idle...just having a cuppa while she cools then I will take the cover off for a visual check of coil packs. If nothing obvious I guess its back to the garage for a vcd scan and see what that shows. Having serviced my polo and my sons golf for a few years now I can't think that the simple tasks placed on the garage were too much for them !

Idle is too high if you have no A/C or lights on.

1,100 rpm on start up and down to under 850 rpm in 40 seconds or so, and just a little fluctuation.

(even in colder weather.)

You might need to take the Tuning Box off and reset the Codes. & see how things are.

Personally i do not agree with that reduced gap for the plugs,

but smarter people than me at Bluespark recommended that.

I would run Standard Gap and then if there were issues, maybe try that reduced gap,

but personally i would junk the Tuning Box,

but then i am not a fan of them.

Hi George did you use 5w 40 for oil and are you still using hifly for the tyres?, I've just starting using comma 5w 40 type G instead of 5w 30 ps cars looking good by the way kind regards longest owner of the Vrs on briskoda lol Mick

Yes this time in is, Asda 5w 40 Full Synthetic.

The Hyfly HF805 215/40 R 17 Tyres are on, they have been great.

(But only on the Front, Pirelli Zero Nero 205/40 R17 on the rear until winter comes.)

A good few vRS Twinchargers owners have had them longer than me, and one or more cars, and covered more miles in them.

Apologies to take this thread offline, I'm changing my front tyres this week and seriously considering the hyfly, at the minute I've got 205 40 R17 Yokohama paradas all round what would you recommend this time? Or would you opt for some winters or stick to an all rounder any advice much appreciated Mick

All i can say is i seriously dislike the ones you have on now on a vRS.

The Hilfly are not Winter Tyres.

I have had 215/40 R 17 Goodride SV308 on in the Snow which were M+S Marked but not actually Cold weather winter tyres and they were good, similar price, about £60 each.

(i wrecked the sidewalls though hitting ironwork sticking out on a road after the Winter.)

Depends on what you need come Winter Time.

Sharkrider and others will have more idea, i only take the vRS out for fun in the snow and slippyness,

for getting places i use proper winter tyres on other cars.

ie more clearance than even my Fabia on stilts has.
