Removing centre air vents

Featured Replies

I need some help and done various searches which haven't given me an answer yet.

How do I properly remove the centre dash vents as my car came with a nasty parrot blue tooth device stuck on my dash and the wire goes down the back of the vents, I've managed to make a mess of it and ended up the front of the vents off but now I can't clip them back in so need to remove the whole vent unit to reclip everything again.

Any help appreciated.

You need a special tool, and that's as far as my knowledge goes on this. I screwed mine up but in the process of not quite getting the front off I managed to break a couple of clips so I had to pay for a whole new vent assembly. That was a whole lot of money for a whole lot of nothing. If I were you I'd get it taken somewhere and get someone else to take the wire out as that is a job that is not worth the hassle!

As above

I havent heard of someone trying and not breakin it

Yea I've managed to make a mess of it lol as my heater cables came out so no idea where they went and still couldn't do the vents so will take it to a garage to sort, nevermind was worth trying lol.

I've removed it without braking anything. (secret removable GPS holder ;) )

There are 8 clips, 4 in each vent. You need 8 steel rods about 1mm in diameter that wont bent. Just insert them from the inside of the vent under the clip ans use them as liverage. The most difficult is to move all 8 clips at the same time to remove all in 1 black.

How did you manage to get it back on then? I tried to push mine back on (after only getting it part off) and the whole vent pushed back so wouldn't clip in.

Instead of steel rods to keep the clips open, I used those long matchsticks.  They are readily available and cheap.  A bit of a fiddly job but I got there in the end.

The difficult bit is seeing where the clips are and to prise them open.  You need a torch to peer into the vent itself.  The clips are recessed top and bottom.  You will see them if you persevere.  Then use a thin screwdriver to lever each one open before holding them open with the matchsticks.  The vent should then just pull out but be careful of the 2 cable connectors to the hazard warning light and airbag light.

Once its out, is it easy to change the vent surround?

I fancy having mine piano black tbh.

I got mine out and yes a little fiddly but it didn't break. I used extra long match sticks to keep tabs open. I took mine out to change for a silver surrounded one. Took about 5 mins to pull out and change over and looks 10 x better
