The 10 year promise

Exhausts

Mild steel systems used to rot out from lead acid (leaded petrol) attack so with the introduction of ULP they would have lasted longer

But

Without anyone being told, we got full stainless steel systems from exhaust manifold to tail tip

They didn't do it just to be nice.....they'd have told you all about it

It was to guarantee a minimum life which mild steel still couldn't.

Really?

I don't think your Yeti has a stainless steel system.

I know mine hasn't.

Put a new mild steel back box/pipe on my defender last year and whilst at the garage there was a big pile of mild steel exhausts, from various marques including my works Citreon berlingo, which had just been replaced again.....unless it was a secret stash of weapons of mass destruction ;)

All joking aside most exhausts are still mild steel and to be fair last a fair while in some parts of the uk.

It's not the old style mild steel I can assure you

Examine the very bottom of the tip for corrosion , mines as crisp n clean as the day i picked it up and has a different 'ring' to it when you tap it

It's not like a kitchen sink and still gets superficially dirty.

Our 93 Nissan Pulsar in 17 years and lots of 1km runs never rotted out

Never replaced any exhaust for a very long time ~ 30 years.........the 'muffler' shops of old aren't around either

Tail Pipe Trims / Enhancements are not exhaust systems, just the bit most people see.

Exhausts as in the Down Pipe, Catalytic Converter, Resonator, Middle Box, Back Box still fail often corroding

from the inside out.

Tyre and exhaust centres are very busy in the UK, often with several places to choose from even in smaller towns.

There certainly has been no reduction is customers requiring replacement exhaust systems or parts for

from wholesalers and retailers.

Business is booming on the parts of vehicles corroding as manufacturers can not make money

if cheap stuff lasts for ever.

That's the point

Out here

They diversified into servicing in general because the DONT rot out any more.

Lot of stories of rotting UK exhaust but how often have members had to replace THEIRS

ANYWAY

It appears we have a 5 year 100,000km 'implied' warranty but Graham says you don't

Correct, in the UK we don't.

Plenty Mk2 Fabia have back boxes or heat shields on back boxes rotten in under 5 years.

Often the System lasts better than the fittings, Skoda do some terrible Clamps, Exhaust Hangers, and also suspension parts, very poor in the way of no protective coating or inhibitors from Corrosion.

The same with Brake Drum Exteriors. Surface corrosion sometimes before the car is even with a new owner.

As much as some European Built Hyundai / Kia are good value cars with 5 Year Warranties,

exhausts can be just pure crap with them as well.

But then the Manufacturers of OEM Components for vehicles can produce the same rubbish for different manufacturers.

Disc Brakes similarly.  Just some very cheap rubbish is specced.

Wow!

I wish I could confirm things so easily, it'd save me a LOT of time .......wasted

I still waiting for complaints of 'members' rotting exhausts .

Give them time.

Or maybe just do a Briskoda Search.

It's a common problem on Fiats, my Panda has had a replacement recently. My mums Clio had the same, also my stepdads Focus. I've not known any of my cars to have SS exhausts as standard either.

I lived by the sea for 15 years and never had a Japanese vehicle exhaust worked on at all......as I say the last was in the 80s

But it happens all the time

Apparently ?

That 7 year warranty that Kia have is starting to look even more appealing than ever.

Like 'extended warranties'

Check the fine print very carefully for terminology/definitions and exclusions though.

As an EU manufacturer this might be of interest as a result of an ongoing discussion in The Conversation :

Bosch

Diesel Systems

Common Rail Systems CRS3. (data sheet) relating to HPFP, Rail, Injectors and Control Unit

Looking down the page there is reference to

Service Life of 3000,000km

Now, do they make our EGRs and DPFs and is there a declared 'service life' and more importantly, is that implication (service 'life') relevant to the end user:

Muggins?

In any case we have a declared service life for these items......FWIW

Something strange seems to be happening to here.

From this, (my above) the diesel's economic life is ~ 300K but not even that is assured.

So the modern CR diesel's reason for being is economy which, in itself, is a gamble when all benefits are balanced by the associated risks.......certainly not longevity.....unless one ignores mechanical costs.

Service Life is not a guarantee, just a presumed life expectancy.

I take it Ryeman is not in the UK - standard stainless exhaust?

Do not beleive any "standard" everyday UK vehicles have a full stainless system unless I've slept for sometime and woken up somewhere else?

My local garage has a pile of old exhausts outside all the time and they sure ain't nothing but good old mild steel.

Vehicles fitted with Ad Blue systems will have stainles exhausts , mild steel will last 5 minutes other wise.

Service Life is not a guarantee, just a presumed life expectancy.

So ~ 10 year life for a diesel.....no better than petrol

HPFP, INJECTORS, [EGR and DPF?] required to last that long to recover the 'economy' benefit

For a profitable business there is the 'write off' ability.......but for me I might put the hard word on for a good deal on a Golf Cabriolet ......just for fun

I'm going to become irresponsible in my old age......long overdue!
