Brake wear Indicator

Featured Replies

Can anyone inform me if the above item was standard or an optional extra on the FL vRS TDI?

Many thanks.

Thought it was strange that my car doesn't have one then after i changed the front discs and pads last weekend. Nowhere to even plug the pad in, no wonder they were almost metal on metal!

Are you absolutely certain that there isn't a spare connector on the nearside? If there is and there's nothing plugged in, an open circuit will be recorded and the light illuminated on the dash. Or it's been coded out.

I thought it was the other way round:

Open = life left

Closed (i.e. metal on metal) = time to change.

I meant the circuit - the wear sensor is just a loop of wire, if the circuit breaks (or the wire isn't present) then the light will come on.

Thanks for the reply,

There definitely isn't anywhere to plug the pad sensor into, and no dash lights. That's why i was intrigued to know if it was standard, which i assumed it was.

Have you had the car from new?

I know some people have just removed the wires and joined them up so the indicator doesn't show. It isn't very reliable anyway and you can see the pads just by looking.

Cheers for the reply. No, I bought 2nd hand at 45k, ex company car.

I stripped and cleaned my rear calipers last weekend. Car, 2012 VRS CR170, is still on its original pads and no sensor cut out in the pad or socket that I could see for a wire to attach either.

It's only on one of the front brakes.

I wrongly expected them to be on the rears too like other cars.

It's on the beancounter's floor along with the soundproofing and stone chip paint.
