Combi boot restraint rails - tool for tightening.

Featured Replies

Hi, I've traced a rattle to the restraint rails in the boot. There are some bolts holding these in with a weird head on them, similar to a Torx but the 'star' has more points. Does anyone know what the tool is called for tightening these? Thanks.

Spline bit, I expect.

If it's 12 pointed, then they're called triple square or XZN bits.

Yes, that's the right name. Many bigger bolts in the Superb's interior are XZN (sometime also called spline or tripple-square), but XZN is the official name. You need a set of those bits if you ever want to do something yourself on your S2.

yup - they are an M10 spline.

amazon have the, as do halfords

well worth having as they do pop up all over the place with VAG cars

Thanks Guys, much appreciated.

If you're getting a set of these, try to get one that goes to M14 size at least. This is needed for the rear caliper carrier bolts, which have to come off when changing the disks. Most sets (Including the one I have) go to a size below this for their largest :(...

And another set of bits to buy after the Torx on the last car.

You may struggle at Halfords. Even if they stock them there's a good chance you will get a blank stare of non recognition. To be fair, I thing if I'd asked for a spanner, I wouldn't have fared any better, since the 'assistant' was clearly more of a spanner than anything they stocked.

I ended up getting the M14 in Halfords - it was a Saturday afternoon, so nowhere else was open. Luckily I knew what I needed and the only one in stock was part of their high end tool range, so warrantied for life with like for like replacement of any one of them that breaks (Even without a receipt as they're stamped with the Halfords branding), so at least I got something half decent. It was strong enough to open the bolts too, even though they were rusted in so hard I ended up using a ratchet strap around the towbar to pull on the ratchet to break them free.
