General rule has been to stay away from "canbus friendly" ones and have the coding set correctly instead.

Yes, avoid canbus friendly unless you fancy replacing the BCM ECU. The ECU in VAG cars does not like the way these emulate bulbs, and the resulting overcurrent will eventually kill the ECU. Problem can also affect wipers causing those to not work at all.

 

You really need to get the car coded for Xenon lights with VCDS, solves the problem and no risk to the ECU.

Yes i dont own a vw group car, they are a knightmare even with led side light bulbs. 

CAN is not restricted to VAG cars. CAN is Controller Area Network, most modern cars (2000+) will have some sort of derivative of it.
