Musty smell in the car...

Featured Replies

Since the weather has got wetter I've noticed a musty smell in the car. No evidence of wet carpets etc. but I thought I'd have a look behind the wheelarch linings, and discovered this:

Passenger side wasnt as bad but still full of crap.

I've cleaned them out now, no more smells?

Some prime compost there

Doubt a smell would come from the arches into the car, clean out your scuttle panel below ya wind screen and ya might need new pollen filter and a aircon de bug treatment done

Wash pipe split making the boot carpet wet or the door seals

Corpse in the boot? Where's the Mrs?

I just wondered if water might have just started leak into the car.

Did the scuttle panel clear back in March when the windscreen was replaced but it might be worth a look.

I was thinking about the aircon, are those aircon bombs any good?

Deffo not the seals, all is good there. The rear wiper arm is broken, its on the November repair list lol, but it means I don't use the rear washer.

Have you checked the underside of the carpets? Could be mold or whatnot from previous water ingress, or maybe carpets were cleaned and not dried properly? If carpets are a bit damp you get endless condensation between the floor pan and carpet could lead to damp smell prevailing despite appearing dry.

I'll have a look when I get chance. If this is the case can anything be done to save the carpets?

Clean again but dry properly. Try renting one of those rug doctor jobbies from morrisons. Meguiars stuff is pretty good off the shelf for interior cleaning also.

hey, can you explain to me what you meant there, since my carpet seems to be wet on my left side, so i want some info on what might be the cause..

On the rear panels in the boot there is a connection for the rear wash pipe the connection usually splits apart

It will probably be the cabin filter needing changing. Will have got damp through using the aircon over summer.

Mines the same.

Switch on the blowers and have a sniff of one of the vents

I found that the doors not closing correctly caused a musty smell in the car, adjusting the doors sorted it
