Clutch gone at 13000 miles

Featured Replies

The clutch on the car has gone at 13000 miles - the car is just over 3 years old past September. As you c can probably appreciate from the mileage this is very lightly used. The car was bought as a used six month old 5000 miles on it.

It is driven by two drivers who both have driven hundreds of thousands of miles without problems with clutches on other vehicles. I realise that the clutch is not included in the warranty but surely a reasonable life for a clutch is more than 13000 miles?

I have been in touch with both the dealership and Skoda customer care neither of whom seen to see this as a problem - your views please?

What year is the car? What engine?

Full skoda service history? Should of only had 2 mind haha.

One little old lady?

You have no idea how the car was driven for its first 5000 miles, it could have been someone who liked to drive with their foot on the clutch or someone who gave it lots of revs when pulling away or liked dumping the clutch at high revs. Sometimes low mileage is indicative of a car thats done nothing but shopping runs with lots of clutch action, this can be worse than a high mileage car that spent al long time on the motorway.

The car is the 1.2HTP - it's not mine it's my father's who is 85. He hardly drives it - probably spread 50/50 between him and myself. I've been in the car with him driving recently and he's still driving ok and not riding the clutch. Just really shocked at the attitude of Skoda towards this - almost immediately the barriers went up - not our problem was the immediate response from the dealer and pushed me towards Skoda - with me reminding them the contract of sale was between them and my father.

I've being quoted three hundred quid for this from an independent that come highly recommended from a garage I regularly use or have it into Skoda with five hundred for the clutch or one thousand for the clutch and fly wheel. Taking it into the dealership would give me the possibility of having some goodwill gesture from Skoda if they find it to be a manufacturing fault rather than a driver burn out. However this situation is made more complicated by the fact that all this would take time from Skoda and my father needs transport immediately to visit my mother who is ill in a care home. Any views please?

theyd give you a courtesy car if you have it done though?

Not sure youd get much luck with goodwill. Id go independant myself tbh.

You don't know what the previous owner drove like.

At the one end I've known someone who could burn through a clutch in ~2_000 miles and at the other my Octy is on the original clutch at 128k (touches self on head ;) ).

+1

My current car is the 1st car in 20 years that I have had to put a clutch in (not including my rally car) this I put down to it having a tow bar fitted??

My next door neighbour would rev the nuts off her car reversing off the drive (slight slope) whilst slipping the clutch, it would take her about 20 seconds to reverse 10’!!

Likewise my mum used to always rest her foot on the clutch pedal (and deny she was doing it) she got through clutches (and brakes funnily enough) very regularly!
