Glowplug change now ESP light on !

Featured Replies

Hi,

OK, I give up !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

About 6 months ago, when car had its service, they found number 3 glow plug faulty. Not urgent to swap, has been starting OK, wait until winter.

Got round to changing them (swapped out all, cheap enough at £35 for four Bosch off Ebay, but get the proper socket as well, 10mm, £8) and found number 3 was high resistance (around 10 ohms) so no glow !

Little b*****s to get out and get back in even with a warm engine (tight) no apparent change in starting, but its not cold yet.

Then noticed ESP/traction control warning light on ?  This had happened once before (apart from when it should be on) when the battery died (after 6.5 years)  it, and another (unusual, can't remember which one now) warning light came on. One light went out after a few minutes, the ESP light took about a day.

It is now on all the time - how do I re-set it ?? And what is the connection between changing glow plugs and this light ??

A final oddity, coolant warning light flashed at me and "pinged" never done that before ! Coolant at correct level, removed level sensor plug from expansion bottle and put it back, now OK !

Now wondering what next !!!!!!!

Cheers,

Lloyd

you need someone with a VCDS lead to do a scan to find out what the fault is and clear the fault to see if it comes back

it could be just a sensor or ABS module failure (which is quite common with ESP cars)

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

Light still on so I think its off to the independent where the car is serviced.

Still can't get the connection between changing the glow plugs and the ESP light. The only thing that would have changed is that there is an extra 25% current drain now all four plugs are "glowing". That shouldn't be a problem with almost new, heavy duty battery.

My golf just had abs speed ring sensors replaced to stop an intermittent esp/abs light problem.

I don't think you do have a connection between the ESP and glow plugs more likely a faulty wheel speed sensor or abs ring. Again a scan will high light if a fault is being detected at a particular wheel.

Car getting to an age where that is likely. If you can get a scan(or buy a cheap code reader) that'll tell you quickly.

I too have a 2008 Scout.

The Teeves MK60 (stick it in the search bar) issue (ABS pump) was a big factor contributing to the ESP light on this era of cars, mine included.

Ours failed a week inside the 3 year warranty though, luckily.
