2.0 TSI sound on startup

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I had the timing chain tensioner replaced on my VRS 2.0 tsi, and on a warm start only (and also on a slope downhill) i have heard this noise. I personally don't think it sounds like timing chain. It is silent from cold or hot, and on flat surface.

Thought i'd share! Not sure if the video will upload so apologies if it doesn't.

Personally I can't tell a great deal from the video having played it a few times. If you are worried about the tensioner issue, get it done because the consequences if it fails are quite severe.

Please give more details of your engine (year / mileage / servicing history / repairs etc)

Thanks, i have already had the tensioner replaced, but didn't opt for the chain / guides, just the tensioner. Mileage is 50k, full history on fixed servicing not long life. Put another video which might give more of an idea without the bonnet up of the sound. To be honest i don't think it sounds like the timing chain, and as it only does it from a warm start and not cold / hot, inclined to think it is some oil draining down from somewhere which i assumed at first to be the tensioner.

oil service with 5w30 Quantum oil 2000 miles ago and genuine filter which i bought from Horton Skoda. Garage who did the tensioner would have topped it up as they had to drain the old oil when it was replaced - but re-used the oil as i had not long changed it

My 2.0 liter FSI does the same I was told by my mechanic it is temporary low lubrication to the cams due to the car being on a slope, does not happen on start up on the level.

Correct it doesn't happen on a flat surface or when it's cold or hot, only on a downhill slope after an hour or 2. I have a sloping driveway hence noticed this only in the above conditions so park with the nose up and reverse in and doesn't do it. Thanks for the info!
