Speaking to a neighbour who works in a VW garage I asked did he know how the cars new they were being tested. He said the criteria appeared to be the bonnet had to be raised, the wheels in the straight ahead position and the car on a known test angle. He said when the story first broke they had groups of people outside the garage now things were a bit quieter. He is convinced that the system was known at a very high level. Joe

It apparently works off the ABS wheel sensors. When it's on a rolling road for testing only the driving wheels are turning so the ABS sensors know the other wheels are stationary hence it knows that it's on a test bed.

Then the United States of America and Vehicles tested in the EU to EU Standards then undergoing Annual 

Smog Testing.  NoX Testing. Defeat Devices etc

This is very scary I think I will ware a disguise every time I get into the car a pith helmet may be handy as well Joe
