My dilemma - Whos gone from a Fab VRS to Octy PD130 ?

Featured Replies

As much as i love my Fabia VRS and i really do! miles better than my previous Civic Type-R!

I might have to sell it for something that i can tow with :( :(

I want to get back into trackdays so was thinking of buying a dedicated track car and a car dolly/trailer to tow it to events.

I know a towbar can fit on a Fabia VRS but its dodgy not being type approved, fecking Skoda :thumbdwn:

So has anyone gone from a Fab VRS to a Octy Mk1 PD130, or vice versa ?

If so i would like to here your opinions on performance comparisons, i know the VRS will be quicker but how much quicker ?

Many thanks guys

:P :P :P :P :P :P :P I don't really think that something just not being type approved by the manufacturer is good reason alone to change car. ;)

If I recall, Octgone did some tests with his PD130 Octy compared to a vRS and on the road there was barely any difference .... until he came to a corner ;) Handling on Octy is set up for comfort :D

Chris

Octy is probably a better towing car, mainly as there is more mass within the vehicle itself to offset whatever you're towing a bit. It will probably tow more mass safely as a result.

Handling wise definitely not set up for cornering on the Octy (vRS version is no doubt better as standard, but then you'd expect that).

devonutopia you have a PM mate

Octy pd 130 makes a very good towcar........it won towcar of the year for good reason......ones with more mileage have softer suspension but nothing a good set of shocks wouldn't cure............0 to 60 very little in it maybe 0.3, top speed furby 129 octy 130......put a dragon tuning box on the octy 130 and overtaking while towing is more than possible :) ....if you want to you can fit "doughnuts" to the rear springs to beef up the towing side a bit......helps when solo as well

Oh and Devonutopia has type approval on his mongrel ....well the pd 100 bit anyway

That's not my car. ;) If you scan my Mallory Park thread, it was one there - Was going like stink, and had a towbar....

OK, you win that one, Jason. :o :(

But it doesn't get around the insurance (and warranty) problems of towing with a car which does not have type approval for towing.

Ahh poo thought Jason had a VRS :(

Not looking good, might aswell get something cheaper if i'm selling my VRS

I'm interested in why the Fabia is miles better than a Civic Type R?

Not after a My cars better than xxxx debate, just your personal opinion having owned both.

I've always liked both cars but having never driven either one I would have thought (based purely on what i've seen on Top Gear etc and my own experience of Hondas & Skodas) that the Type R would be a better bet for hot hatchedness?

I reckon the furbys 130pd engine would be a good unit for towing in any model due to the nice lump of torque!

No worries mate i'm glad to voice my comparison!

The Type-R in my opinion is better than the VRS is two ways and two ways only and thats handling and brake performance.

The things i did'nt like about the Type-R was you could only have 2 people in the back as theres no middle seat! Had to rev it into VTEC (above 5800rpm on standard ECU) to get anywhere quickly, cost me

The fabia is quite a bit quicker.

And a dragonned Superb doesn't leave a Furby either ;)

But the grunt of the Octy TDi will be nearly as nice, in real world driving not a lot different. But the suspension will need stiffening up if you are an enthusiastic driver

Just to update you all.

I popped into my local towbar centre to see if they would fit one for me, the chap looked up in his catologues and showed me that Witter, Brink and Bosal advise against it but he did'nt know the reason for this.

His collegue in the Bristol branch did'nt know either, but recommended going to my local Skoda Dealer which i did.

The very helpful chap there looked on the Skoda accessories website and showed me that the detatchable and solid towbars both have a note saying not for VRS, bum :( the chap then gave me the number for Skoda customer services.

I've just got off the phone from them and spoke to a chap called Tom.

He said that Skoda never intended the VRS to tow and due to the deeper rear bumper that would need to be cut, Skoda did'nt type approve the VRS.

I metioned i would'nt mind if my rear bumper was cut and asked did he think that it would matter?

He said he doesn't think so :) but if any problems arose from fitting a towbar warranty wise, i would not be covered.

Hmmm the only problems i could see warranty wise would possibly be the rear shocks failing earlier or the clutch will start slipping due to the extra weight

So i don't see a problem but the Police might not to mention what my insurance company will say, so its a bit iffy

I think i might go and have a look at a Octy 130 and decide from there, just thought i'd let you all know

I went from a Fabia vRS to an Octavia 2 with the PD140 engine, and must say I think it is a much better car to live with. The octavia 1 is better in some places over a Fabia, but worse in others. But as the Fabia is a later model thats obvious. If you are not too bothered about the handling, get the Octy1, as it can be very floaty over bumps.

I admire you wanting to remain a legal driver. Theres been too many people on here lately blatently breaking laws and commiting fraud on insurance that it's good to see someone that doesnt cost the rest of us money in premiums.

Why thank you :o:thumbup:

20k service due next Wednesday, then hopefully I can start fitting a bunch of nice extra stuff :D

have you not entertained the idea of a road legal track day car? you could always run normal road tyres to get you to the track then swap them over for slicks or just use road legal slicks...

just a thought... might save you selling the Fabia.
