What parts & what procedure to fit front fog lights?

Featured Replies

Evening kids,

I have a Pre-FL 2005 Octavia Ambiente estate, and I'd like to add front fog lights.  What parts do I need (lights, modules, harnesses, switches), how easy is it to do, and will it need coding?

Ta Muchly.

Do you intend to use them (front fog lights are useless in anything less than very dense fog) or do you just want then for the looks?  If the latter why not just fit them and forget about connecting them up.   Front fog lights not tested for MOT.

I intend to use them - on poorly marked motorways it makes seeing the lane dividers easier in very heavy rain, and I have experienced very thick fog (in the dark) on my way to work a few times recently.  I won't be doing the boy-racer always-on thing, although I do think cars generally look better with them fitted than without.

This might help: http://www.geogob.net/vw/fog_install_ver1_rev1.pdf

Although the pre-FL is similar to the MK5 golf I expect the actual fog units might be different, still should give you a good idea of wiring and how to find out if your CECM supports fogs.

That seems incredibly involved.  I was expecting to just plug a harness and the lights in, replace the switch, possibly get something coded, and be done.  I didn't even need any extra wiring on my last car.  Still, if I've got the right module I may give it a try, just not any time soon.

There is always a cheat method, grab a generic relay harness and new switch. Take a feed from the switch, fused power from the battery and a decent ground. Add each one to the correct leg of the relay and you're done!

You'll miss out on bulb out warnings but it'll be a super easy install.

May seem involved but will be worth it

I currently have a vrs bumper with foglights on my ambiente, and ive been wondering this for a while although i was hoping it would be as straightforward as a switch, kufatec loom and a tickbox in VCDS, guessing i may have to let a professional finish this retrofit for me

Hi again.  I've finally ordered the front fog lights and the light switch, and I've ordered the high-line version of my CECM (1K0 937 049 N, to replace 1K0 937 049 M).  However, I'm thinking of wiring straight from the switch instead (via a relay) and not bothering with the CECM upgrade, as it will involve being fitted by someone who can copy the coding from one to the other.

So, here are the inevitable questions:

1. will drawing enough current through the switch to drive a relay cause any issues to either the switch or the modules it is attached to?

2. is the dash warning light wired separately from the unused pin on the switch, or will I need to wire that as well?  I've been told that just fitting the fog light capable headlamp switch will make the dash warning light operate when it is pulled, whether front fog lights are fitted or not.

3. Is there a wiring harness available to make either CECM or relay installation easier?  I can wire up the relay and so on myself, but a harness to take power to and from the lights themselves (with the correct plugs for the bulbs) would be useful.

Thanks.
