Scuffed alloy, paint or powder repair?

Featured Replies

High curb got the better of me and scuffed the rim and one spoke, not too bad but unsightly in my opinion. Been looking around for local repairers in Hertfordshire and found some offering professional services with painted and 2K clear coating and some offering powder coating and lacquer oven baked.

Not sure what finish my 17" Terons have so should I go paint or powder? Or doesn't make any difference?

Anyone used Rimfurb or ChipsAway? Can you get a mobile 'powder coating' or is only mobile 'painting' available....

Thanks folks!

A lot of the cheaper firms only refurb the front, so all the dirt and brake dust on the back gets baked on and covered in overspray.

Any photos?

Terons are only silver with lacquer. You could fix it yourself if you are handy.

Off car, clean, badge out. Rub down scratch, fill, rub down again, primer, top coat, lacquer.

I had a good look in daylight and will have a go myself, it really does not justify the outlay. I will probably do it again so I'll wait until I do a 'Proper Job' on it !! What would you advise as a filler??

Would be interested in your results ajw100 as I have similar minor ding on one of my Terons and thinking to have a go myself... Just not sure what colour silver is required, nor what filler etc. suggestions welcome please folks. Good luck!

Same problem.

Choices, Powder coat £78, Painted £50, size of scuffs two thumbnails and 2" of rim. Went with some Humbrol silver with gloss varnish from my old model building days, I can see the painted parts of spoke in the wrong light from around 3 foot away, wife looked and couldn't see the repair. Good enough for me until I do the proper job.

Cost £0.00

Result! :)

Did it got all the way through to the alloy, if so then NOT using a proper etch primer is a false economy,as its more opportunity to get corrosion working all the way under the paint and eating through requiring more work later on, probably bead blasting all the rotten paint off (although if you are going to have this done fair enough).

Its less than a tenner for some etch primer, and the same again for some standard wheel alloy paint (the anthracites and silvers standard paints are pretty much universal its not like trying to colour match with paintwork),

also if you plan to repair deep marks or gouges, just a few quid for filling material suited for filling alloys (metal based epoxy 2 pack)

Although if its quite a potchy patch repair it should be fairly obvious for where you need to re-do in future I guess so not the end of the world, but you can still DIY it and do it right for not a lot of money, plus left with a lot of still full cans etc for later on repairs.

Hi Ant.

Just got back from the 3rd visit to my physio and my back - lumber L5_L2 - is a big problem at the moment. Removing the wheel is not an option so regrettably have to do in situ. When I looked carefully it seems the scuff only took off the clear and silver as the spoke appeared to be white not alloy colour. I assume the white is the primer coat...... 0.5mm would have seen me clear :swear:

Also a little busy with live in disabled relations 72 & 92 :wall: I will get it done correctly later but I will keep an eye on it and if any signs of deterioration appear it will be sooner than later!
