Replacing an iPhone 6s or 6 plus? Don't if you use iCloud!

Featured Replies

Just a heads up:

Replaced my iPhone 6s Plus in store on Sunday. They watched me backup with iCloud before handing the phone over. Got home and started iCloud restore....all application data missing, no messages and no call data.

Turns out it's a known problem with all iPhone 6s' and has been for over a month (I somehow missed it in all the tech blogs) but Apple still aren't informing people or even acknowledging the problem exists.

Phoned up to complain and after initial denial they are now offering a gesture of goodwill and refunding all my iCloud costs seeing as it hasn't been working.

If you need to replace your phone for a trivial problem then you may want to hold off until the problem is fixed or backup with iTunes rather than iCloud.

Upgraded from a 5s to a 6s last week.  Backed up the 5s to iCloud, then retored the 6s with the latest backup from the iCloud. all done wirelessly.

No problems at all, everything from the 5 is now on the 6.

Perhaps the problem is only with the 6s plus.  Hope you get it sorted.

Heard a few friends and family backing up their apple devices before getting replaced, then everything seems to get lost permanently once the new device is added to your account, across all your devices.

Proof not to put too much faith in cloud backups

This is the problem with clouds, they evaporate in strong sunlight.

It is only an issue when restoring from a 6s or 6s Plus backup. Restoring from older models is fine. Make sure you now backup to iTunes as you won't be able to restore your new backup should anything happen to your new phone.

Apple actually phoned me yesterday after a post I made on their forum expressing my "disapproval" of their service.

Will definitely be making manual backups from now on.

I think that should always be the plan with anything you don't want to lose - make a physical backup to a separate location. The old adage of backups (always have one redundant backup) - one is none, two is one etc.
