Replacing the Key Fob with a Chrome Top

Featured Replies

Hi all - many of you may have seen a mod for the key fobs to replace the black plastic top bit with the chrome ones used on other VW cars. I did this on my octaves with no issue and I was expecting to do the same with my new Superb however I've run into a spot of trouble. The screw used on the Superb (see attached) is not a normal Phillips head like the octavia was and the replacement but is. Can anyone tell me if they know what it is? I've tried a number of torx ones with it but they don't seem to fit.

XZN?

Funny you should raise this issue, the L&K Key Fob comes with Chrome as standard, I thought that my SEL Exec key would be the same, unfortunately not.

While browsing the Superskoda web site, I cam across the Octavia Key Mod, the link for this is, http://www.superskoda.com/Skoda/OCTAVIA-III/Octavia-III-original-Skoda-key-bottom-chrome-endtip-RS6-style, I wondered if this Chrome end would fit the Superb Key Fob, just a shame that Skoda don't  give all the Superb's which is their top model, this as standard.

Hope there is a hack to replace the plastic on the SEL key with the L&K chrome...

Was going to say looks like torx to me. But may be worth looking at some of the other security sets out there.

I got those Chrome ends aswell so am very interested to see what tool is required for this...

Looks like torx but not sure if it's torx or torx + the smaller the screw the bigger the difference is.

I can't upload photos for some reason but is its a Star with a circle center??

Is it like a torx but with a pin in the middle?

I tried a number of different torx screwdrivers and none of them fit. They were either too small or too big. It's odd as the Octavia one was dead easy.

What's the difference between torx and torx +

Daam just a little to late :)

In case anyone is thinking of doing the same with a KESSY fob, this is the inside of the second plastic-only fob that came with my L&K and it's different to the OP, which I'm guessing is probably not KESSY.

That screw top right is a T5 Star Bit. (I've blanked what appears to be the key number)

Just be aware to anyone doing this with the non KESSY key, it's VERY easy to strip the screw head trying to put it back in. I'd suggest putting the old screw into the hold on the chrome bit before putting it in place on the key. Once it's gone in and loosened the hole up, take it out, slide the chrome bit into place at the top and then use the new screw to secure it in place. It has to be absolutely flush, otherwise the side panel won't close again. Just be careful to now strip the screw!
