Stripped thread - intake manifold

Featured Replies

Dear all,

I fitted my GT1749VB today and all went well other than a thread letting go on one of the intake manifold holes. The thread appeared to come out with the bolt on removal despite using the correct OEM green coated bolts.

Now it doesn't really appear to be causing me any issues at present but if it does going forwards, has this happened to anyone else and how did you deal with it?

Is it possible to helicoil with head in place?

Thanks in advance.

Is it one of the larger Allen key bolts, 6/7mm?

I'd personally just make sure a new manifold gasket has been used and make sure the others are nipped up, shouldn't cause any problems then.

But for a solution I guess the only way to repair it is a helicoil.

Yes it is mate. I've used new gaskets on everything I've taken off so hopefully it will be alright for the time being.

I'm guessing due to restricted space the only way to drill it out and helicoil it would be to remove the head. Was wondering if any clever bods on here had any other ideas. I'd repair it as a matter of course if it could be done in place.

My engineer I use can do them in place (well I'm just guessing but he's done everything els)

I'd think whoever repairs it will use an angle drill of you know what I mean.

The tricky but is getting it straight.

Yes know what you mean. There is a machine shop near me which I might pop down to on Monday and see what they can do. Well I say machine shop, they do a lot of custom car fabrication and engine building so I wouldn't have thought this would necessarily challenge them.

Yeah, sounds good :)

At least it's not a major problem, car is still driveable.

Which bolt is it by chance?

Could you not tap the hole the next size up and drill the manifold hole to take the bigger bolt

Yes quite possibly Steve be avoided and it's the one closest to the coolant bottle on the outside, which is a pain in the arse.

And yes retap and bigger bolt could be an option but I think I'm going to explore using a time sert or something along those lines. It's just drilling out the hole which could be a challenge.

Car seems fine at present without it causing any major issue. Just don't like knowing it isn't right and really I suppose worse case scenario is i'll be loosing a bit of boost rather than sucking crap in?
