Optional extras on insurance?

Featured Replies

If you add tined windows to a new car order would you need to add that as modification on your insurance?

Also if you change the grill to a badgless one would you need to add that too, if so then what would it come under as?

Tinted windows yes, most companies have this as a tick box for online insurance quotes.

Badgeless grill probably not, I would inform them anyway, best tell them now than run the possibility of having your insurance voided later on they can then either just add it as a note if there is no option for it.

General rule of thumb is if something has changed from coming out of the factory tell them.

My Yeti has a long list of optional extras which LV did not want to know about. I intend changing the standard steering wheel for a flappy paddle one so that was added as a notifiable extra.

It's all down to the insurer, some as DGW's will not worry, others will want to know.

This is the main criteria.

If the items are specified as part of the order, are standard manufacturers optional extras and included as part of a new build, they are not regarded as modifications and do not need to be declared.

If however they are added after the vehicle is built, even if fitted at the dealers prior to your collecting it, then they should be declared - even if, as in the case of the grille, the underwriters are likely to disregard them.

It all depends on the insurer, if in doubt mention it to them.   Our insurer wanted the full list of factory options over the standard UK spec.

Hi, if you have any questions regarding modified car insurance, please feel free to give me a shout.

Its not necessarily about them not paying out...but if the car was ever written off..they wouldn't pay you out for any non standard items...
