replacement aerial

Featured Replies

Looking to replace with a shark fin type, preferably with a built in booster, as signal can be quite poor with current one.

had a search in this forum, but can't find a definite part number.

Any help much appreciated

Thanks

Depends upon what type of shark fin - The genuine Skoda ones with a whip or stubby aerial or as good (in my opinion) as the standard ones.

Certainly agree with Mike that a shark fin without whip / stubby is very poor.

I think I've still got a whip antenna with base in my garage if you are interested.

Another option, if you really want to go for a shark fin without whip is to get two amplifiers / receivers and put them behind the C-pillar trim and attach to window mounted aerials (I painted my own on using demister repair paint) at the back (assuming an Octavia estate). It's  a lot of faff, but worked very well while I had the Octavia.

I have both for sale if you want them (FM and FM/AM). I also have a VAG shark fin (GPS and GSM) as well.

The aerial, shark fin and receivers should all be listed in the 'For Sale' section. If not, PM me.

Thanks chaps, not keen on getting less performance from the sharks fin aerial, I may just leave it for now as it was purely for cosmetic reasons.

KBPhoto, what exactly is involved with the sharks fin and receivers - is it easy to do? I don't think I have an aerial on my rear screen, it has an aftermarket tint on it which may make it difficult?

Thanks

would i have this in a hatch?

So is this an FM aerial? if so, why have i got one on roof?

Diversity (or twin aerials). There is one antenna on the roof and one in the rear window (hatch).

I could talk you through what I did to get twin antenna in a 2007 Octavia (before diversity). It's not too complicated, but is time consuming. However, I don't think it'll work in the hatch as you don't have spare Windows to use.

What year is your Octavia? I may have missed that bit.

its 2012

If i have twin, why is my reception not too good?

2012 should have diversity as standard.

Could be that a wire is broken in the rear screen (like the rear screen demisters don't work when so well there is a broken line) or that water has got into the base of the roof mounted aerial and corroded the circuit board (this is quite common).

Has the reception suddenly got bad? Mine went to pot when I had the stern (a Columbus) out and had put it back but snapped one of the pins in the double FAKRA connector on the units main board. Consequently, no reception on one aerial.

Can you check your head unit to see if it is receiving a signal on both aerials? I know the Columbus can; I believe the Bolero does as well.

The roof aerial looks good, it was off recently when the roof was wrapped, and I had a good look at it, all nice and shiney underneath.

How do I check the columbus? FM reception is good mostly, AM cannot receive anything, but don't use it anyway.

Thanks

An alternative is to use the Stubby aerial from a Polo, I got my local Skoda dealer to order one in, approximately £20. No loss in FM reception, and I personally think it looks better than the long whippy aerial fitted as standard.

That's a GSM/GPS shark fin.

I can sell you a non-gloss one of those (used) for a lot less if that's what you want.

The stubby aerials are great. Much better looking than the whip ones. The VW Polo uses the same aerial I believe. They come up on eBay for about £12 new occasionally.

Makes me wonder if the aerial was reconnected after or damaged when the roof was wrapped.

To check the Columbus hold down the 'Setup' button until you go past the 'Setup' menu and get to the 'Radio Service Mode'. Then press the 'FM' soft button.

Ant1 is AM/FM and Ant 2 is FM only.

Thanks, I' lol have a check and see on the Columbus.

I'll also see what the polo one is like

Have a great day!

Checked Columbus and both Ant's are on so assume both are connected.

I'll have a look for the polo one

That ruins my theory. But that's good news.

thanks, good theory though, I would have not known to check that, so thanks for sharing.

Now that I have checked my columbus, I may now look at upgrading maps and FW, if there is much benefit to be had.

Depending upon which FW and maps you are in at present, it may not bring anything of worth but can bring plenty of headaches and anxiety!

im on FW 5230 with maps 7918.

I did notice that the speed limit which displays on the maps has disappeared recently

can't figure out what i did.......

I've just changed my dance unit for the DNS 810 Chinese unit, and radio reception was absolute garbage on both until, I changed the whiplash aerial and also added the double fakra aerial connector on the back of the unit as it had 2 aerial inputs, now I have perfect radio reception after doing these 2 simple jobs !
