Confused new TDi VRS owner

Featured Replies

Hi

I have just brought a 2010 TDi VRS estate Octavia minus a spare wheel.

I've done a search on here last night but I've read contrasting information - can someone please clear up the wheel size that I can use for a spare (As there is none) and what size wheel I can buy to use in winter.

For the latter I have read 16" will fit, I've also read the offset is ET51, the PCD is 5x112 and the centre bore is 57.1mm and that I should be able to find VW and Audi wheels on eBay. I have read 6 and 6.5 for rim width but when I add 6 to rim width on eBay there is hardly anything for sale compared to 6.5 where there are 100s

So could someone confirm what size I can fit (with all the dimensions) on the car and thus look online for a set of wheels. Plus any recommendations for a spare.

I'd really appreciate it as I end up going round in circles.

Thanks

205/55-16 tyre on 6-1/2 inch rim. That is the 'standard' spare supplied with my 2012 vRS. PCD is 5x112 and the centre bore is 57.1mm. Not sure about the offset, but the standard 18x7-1/2" rims are ET51 and my winter wheels (17x7) are ET45.

The factory spare wheel is the same size as the recommended winter steel wheel (printed inside the fuel filler flap).

This is my vRS on it's originally supplied steel spare, it is a 205/55 R16...

Thanks for the responses - So I could search for 205/55-16 tyres on a 6-1/2 inch rim and they'll be fine to replace the existing 18" rims.

Thanks

The are a few sets on eBay with the following dimensions:

5x112 16x6.5J with an offset of 50

Would they simply fit on?

There is another set with a slightly different offset of 51 - Does offset matter?

Sorry for the dumb questions :-(

Worst case and you might pay a premium why not go to you local dealer or TPS parts shop and get them to confirm the part number.

You can then either buy via them or source on the net.

A 1mm offset will make no noticeable difference, I use 205/55/16 with an offset of 42 for my winters

This is a great site for a visual example of how different offsets look against the suspension...

I believe the only reason a 6" rim is recommended for winters, is to allow space to fit snow chains.

If you bought from a dealer, take it back...pretty sure its illegal.

If you bought from a dealer, take it back...pretty sure its illegal.

Why?

A spare wheel is not a legal requirement, nor is a can of tyre weld.

The spare wheel or tyre is not checked during the MOT test either.

I thought it was.just checked my bad sorry...still very poor service.

Sometimes its cheaper to buy a alloy wheel

I have a set of 5 audi a4 b6 sport wheels.which are cheap to buy each if that helps.

 Think there 7,5j 5x112 et45 17"

As you probably have seen in previous posts 205/55R16 tyres will suit your car. Fitted on a rim with dimension 6J or 6,5J x16 will be ok. Any ET between 40-50 is pretty close to the original (it determines how deep the wheel will sit in the arch).

The 205/55R16 has a rolling circumference which is just 0.77% different from 225/40R18 (assume this is todays tyres). This is almost no difference, and it is no problem to use these in combination if necessary for a limited period because of a puncture.

Thanks for all your responses guys - exactly the information I was after.

A few weeks after buying my car I hit debris in the road that ripped a large hole in the side of the tyre. My spare wheel got me home and to the tyre fitters the following day for a new tyre. With a 'tyre repair foam kit' I would have been stranded. Won't have a car without a proper spare wheel (ideally exactly the same as the four on the car, but certainly not a space-saver or foam kit.

Officially there are two approved 16" wheels for the VRS to use with winter tyres.

The 6.0 x 16 ET50, which can be used with snow chains

The 6.5 x 16 ET50, which you are not allowed to use with snow chains.

These are the official recommendations and approved sizes from Skoda.

(but of course there are also possibilities to use 17" and 18" or even 19" rims with winter tyres. Only thing is, they are not approved to use with snow chains)
