Road noise / knocking on vRS

Featured Replies

Was driving my Octy vRS today and suddenly noticed a rhythmic type of knocking / road noise...very similar to what you get driving over white lines / chevrons, and can be felt faintly in the steering wheel but not really in the floor and not in the gearstick.

It's definitely related to road speed rather than engine speed, and is most noticeable at 20 - 30 mph. It's reasonably quiet but is definitely there as I've driven around on newly surfaced roads to test it :D . I still have four wheels attached, with inflated tyres and nothing embedded in the treads of those tyres, unfortunately that's the limit of my mechanical knowledge

Any ideas what this could be? Think I'll need to book it in anyway but it would be nice to have an idea what to expect :(

I assume it is not related to braking? How many miles has the car done?

That's right it's not related to braking. Only 18k and hopefully anything should be covered by warranty...

I guess you wouldn't know if th e noise has always been there....seeing as you just noticed it...

Is the noise more notieceable depending on the road surface?

What tyres do you have fitted?

If it's under warranty, return the car tho the dealer. Make sure, if the noise is hard to spot, that you take their service guy out in the car to make sure he hears it.

Sounds very much like your ARB (anti roll bar) Bushes

I had the same problem and recently had mine replaced and it sorted the knocking

Shouldnt be a prob due to your car being under warranty which mine isnt but only cost me around 50 quid to be done

:o Think I've found the cause...I've got a big rivet stuck in one of my front tyres, near the shoulder on the inside so I missed it before when I looked for it when I first pulled over. Hopefully get it repaired all the same, as it's not right on the shoulder.

Some good suggestions though, .

My garage already think I'm nuts as have taken Techs out in the past to listen for little noises on two occasions...once a faint ticking (just the fuel tank expansion valve operating - noticed it posted on here a few times since though!) and a slight buzzing caused by poorly fitted door handle workings behind the panel....both times I was saying "There! That's it! Can't you hear that?!?" to the vaguely mystified Tech. Must just have superhuman hearing and sensitivity, to feel the knocking in the steering wheel. Cheers anyway

LOL Glad you sorted it m8 :)

Nothing worse than an annoying knocking what you cant find

The ARB knocking mentioned, can that be felt throught the stering wheel as a vibrtation or even slight wobble feeling?

The reason i ask is because i have creaking over speed bumps etc from the cars suspension as well as a slight wobble on the wheel that gets worse with speed on a TDi octy.

The garage just claims it's all ok, and said nothing wrong for last 16k miles.

If so i will try a new dealer and see what they say.
