Anyone owned or ridden a "retro" Triumph?

Featured Replies

I'm quite tempted by one of the retro styled Triumphs with the 865 parallel twin engines. I'm leaning more towards an America or Speedmaster, but do also like the Thruxton and Bonneville.

Has anyone here got one, and if so, how do you find it?

I fancy a change and may as well get a type of bike I've not had before, and have always liked the look of these.

Of course I'd really like one of the new Speed Twins or a Thruxton R, but my budget won't stretch that far.

Lovely looking bikes.. But i havent ridden one either.

Chris Wright might have.. Hes our resident Triumph bloke :D;)

I take it experience of a Trident (NT-150, but late model with disc and electric foot) is no help?

No the only ones I have owned and ridden are the triples being the Sprint GT and the Explorer.

BUT.....I know one or two that ride most of the rest of the range and to be honest they all rave about them.  I think the answer is go to one of the showrooms and have a butchers!  Many of them will have more than one model as a demo and are very keen to let you out on one.

Having ridden the triples I think it is a really smooth engine with just that bit more character then the VFR (for me) because of the unique exhaust note a triple produces.  I do not like the style of the custom bikes but that is my opinion and not worth a deal really.  As I say I now guys who have them and they love them.  The Bonnie gets a really good thumbs up from owners as well.

If I were to change (I won't) I would like a Thruxton because I like the look of them but I have a plan for that!!!

I've been close to buying a Thruxton on a couple of occasions, tried a couple on demo and I really do like them.

Enough power if your not a sportsbike rider, and have a lovely feel to them, the second one I tried had an aftermarket zorst and sounded even nicer.  It handled perfectly well as well.

The more recent models have a much better riding position than the earliest ones (the clip ons were below the triple from memory).

Dont have ownership experience, but get to a dealer and try one to see what you think

RBW.

Oh, and slightly left field, I enjoyed the 1600cc Thunderbird as well, they sound brilliant with the after market cans, and you have to ride them remembering its a cruiser due to the ground clearance.

Probably my choice if I wanted a cruiser style bike, very low seat as well.

I've ridden the scambler, America, thruxton and the bonnie.

All as loan bikes when mine was in for service.

I didn't like the America at all. I found the feet forward very awkward.

The scambler and bonnie were good fun. Nice riding position and although not that powerful, went well enough.

The thruxton is essentially the same but I found the bars too low. Might be due to not being as supple as I used to be.

Speed triple here and hayabusa but tempted to try a rocket 111

Being bombarded at the moment from the Triumph dealer with emails about the revamped range.  Nope not interested thanks.  Have my Tiger Explorer and it will do me until one of us is in the ground.  Still like the look of the Thruxton though.

I had a street triple for 4 years and got a few goes on a bonnie and thruxton whilst mine was in for servicing but found both of them to be a little disappointing. To me they felt big, clumsy and sounded naff although a pair of the arrow pipes would sort the sound out. I do really like the look of the scrambler and the new thruxton r looks immense but I've only seen photos of that.

I'm sure it will be easy enough to arange a test ride at your local dealer so you can find out for yourself though.
