drive shaft end caps

Featured Replies

hi everyone

noticed my driveshfts are missing the end caps that cover up the cv joint ? or did some come like that?  mk1 octavia 4x4 1.8t

thanks

do you mean the CV boot?

the black rubber bit in the pic...

if so get them replaced ASAP before salt, moisture and gritty bits get in!

I think the shaft can be split by knocking the joint off the shaft, fit new boot, repack with grease and refit.. the clips are fiddly, jubilee clips easier, but might not clear the hubs

Or do you mean a cap that covers the driveshaft nut?

If so none of them have them.

Hope they are not missing the actual hub nuts!  :o

happy new year

thanks for the reply's, its the end caps on the cv that connects to the transfer box....ok cool, seams strange as the audi tt/s3 have got them, would be good to keep the dirt out ...

cheers

There should be a rubber cover over the CV joint at each end of the driveshaft, on the gearbox end it goes from the shaft, to rubber bit (like on the wheel end of it, as in the pic I posted)then it goes into a thicker section of shaft with the bolt heads that fix it to the gear box.. a lot like this:

I think a photo with finger pointing to the area in question might help here!

I think Grizzle is talking about the steel cap/cover that you can't see in the image above, as it's on the end of the inner CV.  So between the inner CV and output flange. You can only see it when the half shaft is unbolted.

If it is that, then I believe it should have one. Fairly sure my car does, but it's been a while since I've had them off.

bodge yes thats correct the metal cover over the cv joint, ita funny none of my drive shafts have them, perhaps i have a diffrent setup as mines a 2001 car....

.

TT/S3 has different driveshafts being a six speed box.
