Hello from Shetland

Featured Replies

Hello all!

I'm Rich, I live in the glorious Shetland Islands (about 100 miles off the very top of Britain, not 20 miles off the East coast in a box!). I've been a Skoda fan since I was a young lad. My Dad was a closet fan for a few years too but he's out now haha.

It started with him buying an Atlantic Green Felicia when they were first released. He also previously had an Estelle which although I remember, I didn't get to know very much. The Felicia stayed around for a while then Dad had a notion for a Jeep Wrangler. Or three. Before the third Dad got one of the first of the new Felicia Pickups. I liked this vehicle a lot while he had it and managed to keep track of it until a few years ago. A few more years down the line Dad considered buying a Mk I Octavia vRS, a year and a bit after that I got him persuaded to. I really enjoyed this car even though I never got to drive it. I would still love to own a Mk I at some point. But it would have to be standard. I'm a sucker for originality.

Fast forward a few more years down the line to 2008 and I am instructed by said father to find a car for under £1000 to get all my accumulated possessions back up the country from Swansea where I did my uni course. I found myself a very clean looking Felicia with a few issues. I got it for a decent price and after putting in the brake light bulb (which is still the only new bulb I've had to put in the car after eight years!) I did my other checks and set off north. The exhaust rattled off the rear axle and the temperature gauge wouldn't rise above 70. But it would have to do.

The poor Felicia survived her baptism of fire and when I got home to Shetland I set about sorting out the issues. I've encountered a few of the usual Felicia issues including the front strut cup collapsing, the poor windscreen seal and subsequent puddle on the floor.

With a change in job fortune I have run a company vehicle for the past four years. The Felicia fell into a stretch of unuse which I am looking to end imminently having treated it to a near full exhaust system and front brakes. The bodywork is looking a little worse for sitting around now. If I keep it I might tidy it up in time. Its still a nice thing to drive so I'd be sad to part with it haha.

Other developments recently include getting my better half into a Skoda with the purchase in 2011 of a Roomster to cope with the impending expansion of the family. Coming from a Toyota Yaris, a large car wasn't an option and having tested another Roomster, it was clear she was comfortable in it from the off. I found our one on the internet, six months old and not even 1500 miles on the clock and just been traded in on a Yeti. So I went and got it.

And now to the recently departed 2015. Having had a bit more job fortune, I ordered myself an Octavia III vRS in black magic with silver Gemini alloys. And I love it. As for my Dad, well he's now got a brown Yeti Laurin & Klement 2.0TDi 170 and has gotten my Mum a yellow (chosen by my daughter) Citigo.

Thanks for reading.
