mot failure

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

Just had my pre-facelift Yeti in for it's first MOT today and it failed. It looks like the nearside headlight has taken a hit at some point though no obvious marks on the light itself and has broken the top mounting lug. I was quoted £420 for a replacement by the Skoda garage as it is a xenon unit but I don't fancy paying that if I can help it. Repairing the mounting lug shouldn't be a problem, what may be is that the tester couldn't get a beam pattern out of it he was expecting despite him trying to on the diagnostic machine. By the looks of it the projector unit has moved back a couple of mm or so in the unit so is in the wrong position relative to the reflector. Anyone had this and know how I might go about correcting it? Also I have seen a few diagrams of front bumper fixings but no concrete instructions as to how to remove said bumper, any advice would be gratefully received.

Thanks,

Ian

£420 to have it replaced does not sound too bad when Superskoda are asking €500+ for the xenon headlight.

''Also I have seen a few diagrams of front bumper fixings but no concrete instructions''

I've not had any trouble with the lamps but Concrete instructions are usually Cement, Sand and Chippings

I've no idea what they look like but does the replacement need a new bulb as well and does the quote include one?.

In most instances the bulb, igniter and ballast are not included and will be swapped onto the new headlight from the old one.

Have seen plenty of used xenon headlamps on ebay before.

I don't need so much 'jewellery' if it's going to make my vehicle an economic write-off so easily.

You can buy a new lug. Just a few quid.

The OP says that the internals have moved and broken as well, therefore that wouldn't be much use!

And I can't find any of these lugs, do you have a link?

Complete elsa to about 2014. I might have a headlamp as well that needs just a lug. Can have a look if op is interested.

Thanks for all your replies chaps, the plot thickens. I have been checking part numbers including the one in my car. I have found a complete unit in Germany on the bay of E the part number shown on the sticker on top of the unit shown in a photo is 5L2941015B. Thanks to Flapperjack I have ascertained that this is indeed the correct unit for the left side of a right hand drive car. I have also looked at the sticker on the unit in my car at the moment, that is 5L1941017C which according to the elsa listing is for the left side on a left hand drive car. If that is the case then irrespective of the broken top lug, there is not a cat in hells chance of the MOT tester being able to get the correct beam pattern as the unit will be set completely wrong. I think a trip to the dealers tomorrow for a little chat is in order.
