Saloon or Estate Superb?

Featured Replies

I'm looking at getting a a new Superb through the works lease to own scheme and have narrowed the selection down to the Superb. Can anyone tell me whether it is possible to fit roof bars to the saloon version, as we do a bit of camping and outdoor stuff? The boot is usually taken up with the dog and tents etc. so any luggage and other stuff goes into the roof box.

I've currently got a 3 day test drive with a Superb Saloon 1.6 Tdi SE Business and I'm mightily impressed with the standard and the space. This is from someone who currently drives a Volvo V70 D5 SE Lux. I've taken the parcel shelf out of the Superb and know that there is plenty of room for the dog in the boot so the main decision between the Saloon or Estate is based on the option of roofbars.

Yes you can add roofbars to the hatchback as I intend to be doing the same for our annual cruise down to Austria.  From what I can see the clamps lock inside the doors.

Estate for the win! Not just so you can get roof bars (although I think you can for the hatch), but it looks soo much better :)

You must be looking at the SII [emoji6]

The hatch looks great, I went for the estate for the rails as I use my bars all the time. I think they look better and possibly more secure.

How does the 1.6 compare to the D5 in your V70 - quite a power difference, no?

There is a big power difference but surprisingly due to the weight of the V70 if you use the gears correctly in the Superb it wasn't too bad, with the added benefit of much better fuel economy. I'm no longer doing so much driving and miles so may drop down to the 2.0 Tdi rather than the big drop to the 1.6.

Thanks guys for all the replies, at least I know that there is the option of roof rails for the saloon. The decision remains Saloon or Estate and which Spec level to keep it in budget? I'm not too sure If I could lose the engine power and all the toys in the one go though so I may have to select carefully and gently massage that budget  :D

I have gone for the estate for a couple of reasons... the first is i have had saloons for the last 10 years (ok the S3 is a Hatch) but looks like a saloon if you get what i mean so i fancied a change...

To my eyes, the rear of the estate is nicer than the saloon this time round for me,

The additional boot space is appealing on the estate.

Have you done a quote on a 1.6 TDI SE Business Estate ? I found that there was not much differeance between the 2.0 TDI and 1.6 TDi due to the resale, Will you be paying BIK ?

I have ordered a 2.0TDI, SE Business Estate.

I've run quotes on a number of the models and if I'm going with the estate there isn't much difference between the 1.6  with options and the 2.0 litre base models, it's all down to the different trim levels and added options, I can get a lot more options on the 1.6 for the same price. The saloon 2.0 models roughly work out at the same price as the base 1.6 estate models. Yeah I will be paying BIK but there isn't much difference between the models as far as I can see.

A quick update, I eventually opted for the  2.0TDI, SE Business Estate in Corrida red with a few options added to make it  more comfortable.  As this is through the company lease scheme they have given me a "Stock Date" of 27/05/2016 but as yet no "Delivery Date". Has anyone had any experience of the lease schemes and could you explain whether there is a gap between stock and delivery? The dates are fast approaching now and I'll need to start making a few arrangements as I am working away from the 30th of May for the week.

I think you have made the right choice.

For me.. the car came into stock and then i had to wait 8 days for it to be delivered.

I would say add 7days for PDI, reg plate and delivery.

For what your needs are you should go estate.

I have a S2 estate and can think of only three ocassions in six years I have used the roof bars. All trips to that Sweden Devil Shop.

I went for a saloon this time with my S3 order as I think for once the hatch looks better and there's not a great deal on load space difference for my needs.

I went for the estate based purely on looks, as in my opinion it looks better than the hatch.

The Estate version is IMO more practical, although the S3 hatch is much better now than the S2.

If you've ordered any specification car with options, then it would be unlikely to have such a short lead time. Looks like a standard lead time applied by the lease company, in my experience it will probably update once the supplying dealer has a confirmed build date.

Car getting delivered tomorrow and I'm really looking forward to it. I may even need to take a few hours off work to make sure that everything is as expected and to find a parking space within 30 or 40 miles of the office. (Loch Lomond looks appealing  :notme: ) I'll just ned to get some accessories on order now, especially a decent boot protector.
